The Furies (2019)
The movie does try its best with a really good idea. It never really takes off though. The premise is quite unique or rather what it tries to do with it. And that is quite fun. It is packed in a known overall scheme/format, but still there are some neat things thrown into the mix.
Overall this is decent and should satisfy quite a lot of people. If that really is the case for you, enjoy the ride, don't worry too much about the flaws and inconsistencies in the script ... if you can, you'll be entertained, if not ... you won't
Forget About Nick (2017)
Forget about the movie
I don't recall when I last watched a movie dubbed - well let's put it in my calendar then ... although let's not. I will not remember this movie. It's not that it's an awful one, but including the bad dubbing, this really is not worth your time. Story is simple enough and I guess if you don't mind the cliches and the predictibility you can have some fun with it.
The dubbing snob might be something unique to myself, but I think it really is disturbing and takes a lot out of the movie (I would have rated it even lower if I hadn't seen the trailer and heard the real voices) ... I will leave that up to you to decide
Dia de los(t) muertos
Dream big - quite literally. Especially when or if you think creatively. At least that is what the movie is telling you. And it's really a good movie. While I didn't get the "short" about Olaf while watching this on Netflix, the movie worked on its own and maybe even better.
Really well structured and told. The story of a young boy who has to overcome quite a lot of obstacles to reach or get to where he needs to be. Not just for kids, quite the opposite. This might work for adults even more than for the little ones. Though there is so much for them here too - effects, animals and dreams. Not too morbid if you were wondering
It Takes a Lunatic (2019)
Acting ... up
Not just a teacher - and a lot of celebrities/actors who praise him. This is as in depth as it can get. If you didn't know the man (I didn't and I guess most people outside of New York or an in depth knowledge of certain actors and their studies didn't either), now you know him.
Now as in after you watch this documentary. 2 hours which never feel boring or stretched out. This is nicely structured and well researched and edited. If you like actors and don't mind a look behind their process and a general look inside their head and feelings - this is for you. There are also certain specific events and it also shows a social (commentary) side of the man. Truly an example of someone who broke barriers and helped a lot of people (across gender, skin color and/or nationality).
Tell Me Who I Am (2019)
The main thing here, is the structure. Although very early on, things are layed out and the big reveal may not be as surprising to some as to others, it helps elevate the movie and what the twins had to go through. Something you do not wish upon your enemy.
This is quite the documentary and it will affect some people more than others. Real life stories, but not as in soap operas, even though they had adopted some of the story lines that happen to everyday people. Truth is stranger than fiction ... always. See certain politicians, which I won't name, not even the countries. Whichever one you think I mean, says something about you and/or the current situation - worldwide.
But back to the brothers who get a therapy session and getting to know them, you really are rooting for them and feel for them too
La influencia (2019)
No I'm not under "the influence" - although if I was, I would deny it, wouldn't I? Probably ... so bad joke aside and back the movie. I am surprised about the low rating, but it just goes to show you that tastes are different! Way different. And I'm not saying anything about anyone being right or wrong (although to keep a theme going that should be write or rong I reckon, as in "waist of time" - which in turn would make a great movie title) ... this is just about what someone likes to watch and what not.
This is more of slow burner, though it still has quite a lot of jump scares. And even the sturcture and build up is quite interesting. You kind of know that something wicked has happened and you know something evil is lurking ... and still it is comprehensive and it is tension filled enough to work. If you go with the flow that is ... can you dig it? I for once like my horror to challenge me a little bit, not to mention the characters involved!
Say my name
Actually don't and the music reference does not say anything about the movie either. Though I'm pretty sure they didn't just roll the dice on that one, but had some thoughts on it (biblical and all that). The name aside this movie is quite nicely structured and if you don't mind jump scares, you will have quite an entertaining ride.
There are certain twists that I did not see coming and others that I think were quite obvious. Whatever the case may be (or rings true for you), the movie will work for people who do like horror movies in general - do not let the flaws take the fun away from you. Good actors too btw
Woman scorned? Take a back seat
You probably know the saying, but Halle Berry is not scorned. No she is mad, angry and desperate. Why you ask? Well look no further than the title of the movie. So you know what is going to happen and you wait for it to happen (a couple of red herrings are thrown in for good measure) ... and when it happens you are not really surprised.
But the coincidences and other convenient things start to happen and you may have one or multiple issues with what you see on screen. Suspending your disbelief is not an option - it's mandatory! Otherwise you won't survive the movie - no pun intended. This really is quite the ride - well maybe pun intended. And while I love Halle Berry and you can fully understand her, there are multiple flaws here, that you may or may not be able to overlook. So the degree of your enjoyment will be completely up to yourself and how willing you are to just switch off your brain ...
Preston Tucker - I never knew him. Well before I watched this movie and I'm guessing I still don't know him entirely. But now I know of him and what he did for cars. Incredibly, but I guess because I'm not a big car guy, it's not really surprising I never heard of him.
Jeff Bridges plays him with gusto, but even the smallest parts are casted quite nicely. The drama is real life but might be heightened a bit for better effect. A period piece with a structure you might be familiar with, but done very nicely. The movie works on many levels (man with a dream fights against all odds) ... Drama and a very good one at that
Just One of the Guys (1985)
Are you confident in your ... gender? Manhood/womanhood? Or maybe you already identify as ... neither. Whatever the case, the 80s had some pretty clear lines and this movie "crosses" them. As in cross dresses them, as in main character gets in disguise to prove a point just to get sidetracked by her hormones.
Now you could see a lot of things as wrong (especially with moral shifts, own personal belief system, sexism and some other stuff) - the movie tries to play off of those things and making light fun of them. Again there will be people offended by them. If you are easily triggered maybe just don't watch it. Cliches and predictibility ... and nudity! It has it all (?) - or nothing at all. Depening on your own views
Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993)
Faster than a ...
Well as fast a dialog as you can imagine. If that makes sense or is something you like to "endure" (=enjoy) is up to you to decide. There is a lot of comedy and a lot of quibs. And there is some tension and some mystery thrown in for good measure.
Acting wise this works too. Again you have to be prepared of what you are getting. Uninitiated and/or those who have issues with the pace and the general "comedy" behind the zingers, might feel different, but overall this is a really good movie. Not sure how romantic I would rate it, but it does work in that department too. Not an easy task, with everything thrown in for good measure
Hotel Mumbai (2018)
Quite the mess
Not the movie, but what actually happened and what is being shown here. Maybe you don't like movies based on real events, but this really keeps it ... well real. The movie is quite exhilareting and quite draining to watch. Not easy and most definitely not for the faint of hearted.
Why certain things happen is tough to answer and the movie is not going into much detail about the culprits. It concentrates more on the "victims". What a powerhouse performance by the way for our main character. Tough but quite essential if you like dramas
A Kingdom for ... a Kingdom?
Now I do have a soft spot for Shaw Brothers movies. And while this isn't one, the nostalgia might creep up while watching this. It's quite a throwback to the glory days of Eastern movies. That also means, this has some major flaws, as did the "originals". Characters are a bit thinly drawn, but there is so much action happening you might not mind anyway.
Stunts, action and camera work are really good. The predictibility of the story does not matter that much or rather shouldn't matter that much. You know what this is, treat and watch it as such
Girl on the Third Floor (2019)
House guests can be unnerving. Especially if you move into a new house, the question is, if you can deal with someone else. Not to mention the things going on in your own life (having a partner, friends or whatever). In this case, moving into a new city and not seeing or comprehending all the warning signs, might not be the best thing.
There are certain things that are just too convenient, but overall the horror can work, plotholes and all that. CM Punk (his Wrestling name) plays the main character and overall he's doing a very good job. But there is only so much he can squeeze out of the troubled character he's portraying ...
Just because something is reborn, it doesn't make it immune against predictability. In this case cliches are really thrown at the viewer and a lot of things can be spotted miles ahead. Still it can be fun to a certain degree, if you let the movie.
I like Barbara Crampton, but even if you are a fan, you should not expect too much. There is only so much anyone can do (including Michael Pare) with a script/story like that ...
Being different can be tough. Especially at a certain age. But who really is different and how different? And why would your own father ... well the story is quite complex, especially if you haven't read anything about it before you watch the movie.
Which is a nice way to enjoy it, since this has a few surprises ahead. For a low budget movie, the effects are quite nice. And the story is more than interesting and holds the tension throughout. Some things may be easy to spot and predict, but it's still quite original and very entertaining.
Eating and serving
This is like a play. But a very violent and weird play. There's a lot of different characters and a "story" that is far out. There is quite the stretch in imagination and suspension of disbelief you have to go through. If you do though there is quite some fun ahead.
Maybe in this case it makes sense to watch the trailer just to get a feeling of what you will be getting into. Generally speaking, many things that happen are predictable (including twists and turns). Still watching some of the mayhem unfold can be quite entertaining (if you are not squeamish)
Filthy ... good(?)
Now I was not aware of the term mope ... if you are it doesn't really mean one of us has issues. Whichever you may think that is. And anyone not aware will be getting quite the information about that term. These are people in the porn industry that most watching the content are not aware of. You can feel bad for them I reckon - the ones depicted here are a bit of an exaggaration of what Mopes are and what they do.
Having said that, the movie is not easy and takes turns that some may disagree with. And while this is not an adult film (nothing really explicit is shown), the situations overall are quite adult as you can imagine. Nothing for the squeamish then and nothing for those who may have issues (identifying) with our two male leads ... everyone else will be stunned, if not really entertained (which is a weird thing to say, I know)
Some sequels do not get the same title as the original movie. One of those cases we get here. Based on novels (I think of the same titles, I haven't read them) the movies are quite good. They push boundaries and are quite horrific in more than one sense. But that is what they try to do.
If horror is not your thing, this may offend you quite deeply. It may also offend religious people, whether it was meant to be very obvious or not is another thing. But it is there and the movie does not care, if some will hate it for it. It's like an animal, not very lady like then. And therefor the title is quite fitting
The Professor and the Madman (2019)
Sometimes you have to wonder, how mad some people can be. On the other hand, who defines their madness and how can you help them? A situation that is similar to the "help me, to help you". Well in this case help is being received, even if the person receiving the second chance may seem not worthy of that. But Sean Penn and Mel Gibson really are on top of their game.
This is based on a true story and while that may feel like something some viewers dread, it does work in this case. Really thrilling and filled with suspense and human drama, this has it almost all. Very well made and quite a rollercoaster ride of a movie (if you like dramas)
Good and bad
Or is it the other way around? If one has to team up with a certain individual that is morally not on the same level - well that can be problematic. But the movie does a great job with all the main characters. And it may take a while to really get going, but once it does, it really can't be stopped. Parasite has proven that Korean cinema is strong. Hopefully that helps movies like this (based on a true story nonetheless) to get the spotlight they deserve.
This isn't the only movie to look out for, but one of them. So if you accidently came here, because of the Oscars, I believe that is a good thing. Keep exploring and you may find a few gems you may never have watched before. Acting here is top notch, the technical aspect is great too. There's almost no bad thing you can say about it ...
Red Letter Day (2019)
If you have a weird and quirky sense of humor that is. The movie itself is quite flawed, but not to the degree that it would take out the fun of it all. If you like small budget movies (and thrillers to that extent), you will like this, with everything it offers and everything it doesn't.
Not the best acting overall, but it does the job. As does the technical "standard" of the movie. Again, one could easily nitpick on so many things - but why do that, when you can have some fun with this? And it has its heart in the right place
There's a saying in German schools, that goes something like "he/she was always trying to do his/her best". Now that is code that can be read as, that person could not really achieve anything. Now this movie has a nice almost unique idea, but it does not do its best with it.
There are certain segments/scenes that really feel like they go on forever. The ending almost makes up for most of it, which can be seen in ... well I guess ambiguity. I'm not sure if it was meant that way, but you can read something into it ... then again, I might be too nice, as I've been accused of before ...
Drink Drank Drunk (2016)
Funny - how?
Some might feel that the outtakes during the end credits are the funniest part of the movie. Now that would be a mean thing to write and I personally would not think of doing that. Having said that, you should be prepared of something really silly to say the least.
The movie works on a bare minimum and some might like the humor more than others. It will depend on taste of course ... overall this is quite decent I reckon, with some jokes/scenes that work and others that I think fail ... watch the trailer to get a feeling and decide if that is something for you or not
Chung fung che (2015)
Crime - what is it good for?
Especially when "nicer" criminals are being treated the same way, than mean criminals are being treated? Then again, even the nice ones can be quite ... mean. It's quite complex at places, though the story overall is quite simple. There's violence though, disturbing at that. Not always because it is explicit (that is also the case), but because it is just unnerving.
The actors are good, especially because of how the roles are written. A really thin red line ... to walk on. Not without flaws, but thrilling enough and decent enough filmed.
