The Big T.N.T. Show (1966)
A year after TAMI, equally great
Back in the 90s I set out to find a copy. It was explained to me copyright issues kept it being released. In early 00s I found a unauthorized DVD with both films by way of Japan. It's all performance here, very little of the stupid packaging that TV appearances cluttered the performers. And no lipsynching! I saw this at a large urban theater in 65 with girls screaming in the audience. Kinda cool memory. Now quality print on YouTube.
Jennifer Ehls is my fave and she's billed fifteenth.
As I write this Coronavirus has entered the consciousness and memories of this 2011 film are not pleasant. So it's a tough rewatch today, as I suspected its even better than memory allowed. The prosecution's focus on culture vulnerabilities and dedicated public pros is the same takeaway as first viewing.
Motherless Brooklyn (2019)
This is really underrated. Think Liebowski, Blue Dress, True Rom.
You could have fun making a drinking game of facial verbal tics displayed here. This is so meta and welcome to do so. The Robert Moses take is an example of how ambitous this film is. Not quite Chinatown, LA Con successful but a real run at it. Ed Norton and ensemble really deliver. Bruce is splendidly arrayed for a crucial part.
Insultingly bad! One star for being mostly in focus.
Ya gotta be putting me on. This is trash and not any sorta fun kind. I don't understand any positive reaction to this hokum. I don't get it and don't want to. The comic book sensibility has devolved into nonsensicality.
Love Birds (2011)
Easy charm, warm & fuzzy flannel.
7 is a little high but so few romcoms deliver as much as this one does. So it earns it by comparison. The leads are pretty wonderful and I have an affinity for Auz easygoingness. I make no apologies 4 corny.
Be Cool (2005)
Get Shorty to this pos?
This has got to be one of the worst sequels ever. Superman 2 to 3, Trial of Billy Jack, Godfather 2 to 3. This is worse than those.
Les innocents (2006)
Understated mood poem of grief.
I've watched this twice and marvel at the lead performance and the directorial control of mournful feeling in these beautiful Parisian settings. Chabrol comes to mind, of course, but he had a wicked humour that's not here. I've not read Simenon and only know a couple Maigret iterations. Very effective tv drama.
Body & Soul (1993)
Get the habit!
What a wild career K.S. Thomas has had. I found this doing a 'Brit' search of Prime this week. There is a real woman sensibility apparent here. Adult, reasoned, understated, effective.
My mother took me to see The Nuns Story when I was age 6. Rather minimalist for a Catholic preadolescent but sacrifice for the spiritual life is kinda baked into the C cake! Some know if which I speak!
1993 is still early in Brit tv production value fortunes. The cinematography kinda sucks. Choices made can only be for budget constraints. I didn't dig the look. But Scott transcends every screen second. Don't believe me? Please just...
I gotta go but more people should see this and not annoy me with clever non habit forming reasoning.
Sinners and Saints (2010)
Sadistic appeal for people who like burning flesh
Sensational sadism, ridiculous, overheated genre cliches, crafted with some talent and intensity. Obligitory reflective moments are as convincing as a typical Christian movie. Somewhat memorable time waster.
Mrs. Columbo (1979)
No Levinson Link- Colombo connect in name only! Rate 2 for being in focus.
Total POS. No Colombo connection in character, mystery format or entertainment attitude. If yr a Colombo fan- Skip it. Any praise for this is more mystery than what's in the show
What They Had (2018)
Great film...how can it find an audience?
Elizabeth Chomko, cast and crew have created something extrordinary. Downer subject, cold climate, intimate ensemble scenes. I loved it! I'm afraid there's little patience for this genre even in the "critical community". This is not a message movie. Tackling the messy substance of contemporary living is not a message. Highly recommended to adults 50+.
Killer Looks (2018)
Amateurish, softcore vibe that some might find fun
I give it a 5 cause I like the genre and the unspectacular but attractive women. Film score, perfomances, dialogue are all charmingly bush league. Unfortunately I've spent 80 mins on worse
Last Action Hero (1993)
I can't understand any of the love...most annoying kid til Justin Chatwin, War of the World
Not one rave acknowledges the incredible miscasting or construction of the kid character. From start to finish this annoyance can't be justified. All the fun cameos can't overcome the central hole in the screen.
Columbo: Forgotten Lady (1975)
1975 Sunset Blvd with Janet Leigh aged 48, in a black unitard.
If yr a fan this is great ep. From an elderly 2019 perspectIve it's extra rewarding. Janet Leigh starred in many ageless classics. %wise her career has more hits than most. John Paynes last credit with heyday studio to Karlson/Mann B's to tv work trajectory, it means something to me. There's unexpected moral complexity and empathetic, delusional beliefs present that appeal to people with many years of memory.
And So It Goes (2014)
Sort of a high end Hallmark film
If you're looking for a feel good commodity entertainment this should fill the bill. Talent, committment, beautiful location, quality production elements are all here. Predictable character arc, quirky, likable supporting characters. It checks all the boxes! My cynicism is split between this manipulative story and and my emotions falling right in line with it's beats.
So's Your Aunt Emma! (1942)
Above average Monogram B thanks to Pitts and hip script
Allowances made to poverty row productions; this is really fun. I'm saddened by a recent read that many aged under 20 have never watched a b&w film. They'll never know the charm of, " Go on, take a powder. "
The Missing (2014)
Admire it but it's dreary humorlessness lacks humanity.
Confusing structure, intriguing, unpleasant mystery, dissolution of marriage; have I sold you on it yet? I dunno but... Talent on camera and behind, There's a maochism at work here that I can't get with.
Interview with a Hitman (2012)
Stylish, mid budget, POS. I pity the fool calling this movie good.
You wanna take 90 minutes of yr life to absorb unmememorable, casual murder for entertainment, WELCOME. Comments of praise here are pitifully ignorant. The lead is an embarrassing stiff and so's the support. Ethnic stereotypes abound. Story stucture? Fuggitaboutit. This should go straight to Rifftrax and get the ridicule it deserves. The elephant... is an enthusiastic audience for this trashy, nonsensical vio!ence. I got the creeps! If I didn't love movies so much.... . I'm ashamed to be associated with reviewers who praise this film. Laughable!
Jack Irish: Dead Point (2014)
This and 3 earlier tv films are very good. Hour long tv series less so.
I stream a lot of stuff. I find some Australia/NZ shows particularly good. Underbelly, Westside, Outrageous Fortune, Place To Call Home are memorable with storytelling, acting and soundtracks that are in the best examples of this tv golden age.
Corner Gas Animated (2018)
Better for exaggerating the original
I don't even like Canadians but really dig this show. Original, animated and even give a pass to the movie.
Soprano fans..yes it's Uncle Junior
Solid ep featuring Dominic Chianese as a visiting American. His dialog is dubbed by a Sicilian actor but still boasts his screen presence. I love the series in general and was happy to see Dominic guesting here.
Il commissario Montalbano (1999)
My favorite non English speaking series.
Every episode is a feature film. Visually beautiful, great casting, musical language, solid mystery construction, expressive of human frailties. A little creepy with lots of older men with beautiful young women. Sure the formula shows thru after a few eps but I never tire of the country and expressive characters.
F#&k! When they ask u....
This is one of the great eps. One of the exemplary, great eps of all long form dramas. If U don't know what I'm talking bout, I don't know why you've read this far. As an evangelist for The Wire episode 4 is the one that hooks ya.
Gods and Generals (2003)
Excellent production of tedious storytelling.
These reviews praising the film mystify me. They are written by people who don't watch movies. Like praise for Christian films of family wildlife adventures. You love the civil war and particularly the lost cause you'll probably dig it. It's far less affecting than Gettysburg.
Angel on My Shoulder (1946)
You dont like this, i dont like you!
This is a joy. Its a civic lesson. Its a great, last gasp of golden age Hollywood. Paul Muni is a total artist and a great example of Hollywood artistry. Murky politics, even more questionable religous belief displays a true American mythos of the WWII generation. If Trump could watch something other than self-aggrand...ya'know what I mean?
