Storyline

Almost immediately following their last case, the BAU is called to New Orleans, Louisiana where ten dead bodies, recently deceased, have been found in a vandalized crypt. All ten are burnt beyond recognition, each body being drained of its blood. Due to other evidence, the team believes the murders may be ritualistic and related to voodoo. The identification of the first five victims results in a mixed victimology across races, genders, ages and socioeconomic status, with three having been homeless and two working professionals. The M.E. is also able to determine that all victims were killed by large doses of ketamine, with the exsanguination and the burning, where the unsub used rubbing alcohol as an accelerant, occurring post-mortem. When a further victim emerges alive, the team believes they know the unsub's targets: anyone who displays any open symptoms of being sick, his mission to put the targets out of their misery, with voodoo not factoring into the crimes. Trivia

Elaborating more on what Reid said about plague doctor masks: the beak was hollow and was filled with dried flowers (especially roses and carnations), spices, herbs (usually mint), camphor or vinegar. When these masks were used in the 17th century germs had not yet been discovered, at the time it was thought that disease was spread via bad smells, known as miasma theory or "bad air" by laymen. The purpose of the mask was to act as a filtration system to protect the wearer from the so-called "bad air" and the eye holes were covered with glass. Plague doctors also wore long, thick gloves that extended all the way to the elbow and robes that extended all the way down to the feet, the robe also had a hood that was always worn up and the doctors also wore a wide brimmed hat. Miasma theory originated in the dark ages in Europe and Asia and continued to be popular well into the 19th century but with the invention of the microscope and the discovery of germs the theory started to fall out of favor by the mid 19th century and by 1880 nearly all doctors and scientists had abandoned miasma in favor of germ theory. Quotes

David Rossi: Hey. Just, uh, checking in to see how you're doing.
Emily Prentiss: It's tough to remain calm when someone's trying to get under your skin.
David Rossi: This isn't an annual review?
Emily Prentiss: Ostensibly, yes, but Barnes has been through every command decision I've made since taking over as Unit Chief and thrown them back at me, including Stephen's death.
David Rossi: She's trying to rattle you.
Emily Prentiss: Yeah. She's after something. I just don't know what.
David Rossi: You know we've got your back, right?
Emily Prentiss: I do.
David Rossi: So how can we help?
Emily Prentiss: Solve this case. Show Barnes we can ...
