‘Funny Face’ Review: Tim Sutton’s Impressionistic Superhero Movie Re-Imagines the Joker as a Knicks Fan
(the much-loathed CEO of the Madison Square Garden Company was also namechecked in “Uncut Gems”), Tim Sutton’s “Funny Face” begins with a premise that will make perfect sense to any long-suffering New Yorker: What if the Joker were a Knicks fan? Well, begins may not be the most accurate verb to use here — as with most of Sutton’s languid and oppressively suggestive work, the movie doesn’t start with a premise so much as it watches one thaw into shape over the course of its runtime — but that question is eventually pointed at us with all the subtlety of the Bat Signal.

It might even be the clearest thing that Saul ever says, as the mealy-mouthed Coney Island misanthrope launches into an impassioned rant after someone asks him why he doesn’t just root for the transplanted Brooklyn Nets: “This city doesn’t care about the losers! It only cares about money!

The Safdies Team with Nathan Fielder for Showtime Comedy Series The Curse

The Safdies Team with Nathan Fielder for Showtime Comedy Series The Curse
The collaboration of our dreams is commencing. Following their hit thriller Uncut Gems, the Safdies are teaming with a guy who graduated from one of Canada’s top business schools, Nathan Fielder. Rather than heading to the big screen, they are going to the medium Fielder knows the best: television— specifically Showtime.

Deadline reports the duo will direct the pilot for The Curse, a half-hour comedy show written by Benny Safdie and Nathan Fielder. The series explores how an alleged curse disturbs the relationship of a newly married couple (one of whom is played by Fielder) who star in Flipanthropy, their troubled Hgtv show which is produced by Benny Safdie’s character. Though not inspired by Hgtv’s actual show Flip or Flop, we imagine they’ll be poking fun at some reality TV tropes.

While it is the first time this trio is collaborating, the Safdies’ fondness for Fielder

‘The Curse’: Nathan Fielder Teams with ‘Uncut Gems’ Directors for Showtime Comedy Series
In the wake of last year’s anxiety-inducing, Adam Sandler gambling thriller Uncut Gems and their short film Goldman v Silverman, co-writers/directors Josh and Benny Safdie (aka the Safdie Brothers) still haven’t officially lined up their next movie. But a new report says the directing duo will soon head to television, because they’re teaming up with Nathan […]

The Safdie Brothers and Nathan Fielder Teaming Up for Showtime Pilot ‘The Curse’

The Safdie Brothers and Nathan Fielder Teaming Up for Showtime Pilot ‘The Curse’
With films like Uncut Gems and Good Time, the Safdie Brothers -- Benny and Josh -- have crafted a relentless tone of propulsive cinematic anxiety. With his magnum opus Comedy Central series Nathan For You, Nathan Fielder made us all cringe and feel copious amounts of anxious empathy for the real folks he convinced into doing terrible things. Now, Deadline reports that these three folks -- the Safdies and Fielder -- are teaming up for a Showtime pilot called The Curse. And I'm a bit concerned that it's going to be, oh I dunno, the most anxiety-inducing piece of content ever …

The Safdie Brothers and Nathan Fielder Team Up for Showtime Comedy Series ‘The Curse’

The Safdie Brothers and Nathan Fielder Team Up for Showtime Comedy Series ‘The Curse’
Nathan Fielder and “Uncut Gems” directors Benny and Josh Safdie are bringing their talents to Showtime, which has given the green light to a pilot for “The Curse.”

Deadline reported that the half-hour comedy series, co-written by Benny and Fielder (“Nathan For You”) and directed by the Safdie brothers, will center on a mysterious curse that disturbs the relationship of a married couple who star in a fictional Hgtv show. Fielder is expected to play the husband, while Benny will play the producer of the fictional show. Fielder and the Safdie Brothers will executive produce the pilot, which will be produced by Showtime.

Additional details about the series, including additional casting and a release date, are still under wraps. A Showtime representative declined to comment.

The Showtime pickup continues what has been a prolific few months for the Safdie brothers, whose Adam Sandler-led “Uncut Gems” became a smash critical and commercial hit.

Showtime Orders ‘The Curse’ Comedy Pilot From the Safdie Brothers & Nathan Fielder
Exclusive: Showtime has given a pilot green light to The Curse, a half-hour comedy from Uncut Gems directors/co-writers Benny & Josh Safdie and Nathan for You creator and star Nathan Fielder, I have learned.

Written by Fielder and Benny Safdie, The Curse stars Fielder and co-stars Benny Safdie. It explores how an alleged curse disturbs the relationship of a newly married couple who star in Flipanthropy, their troubled Hgtv show, I hear.

Fielder will play the husband; Benny Safdie will play the producer of the Hgtv show.

The Curse does not cite any real-life inspirations, though its description does bring to mind Tarek El Moussa and Christina Anstead, stars of Hgtv’s popular series Flip or Flop, whose marriage fell apart after the success of their show made them household names.

Fielder, Benny Safdie and Josh Safdie executive produce the pilot, which is produced by Showtime. I hear the project

Built on rock: the geology at the heart of Oscars sensation Parasite

Built on rock: the geology at the heart of Oscars sensation Parasite
As in Uncut Gems and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, a symbolic stone adds weight to Bong Joon-ho’s searing satire of Korean society

When Bong Joon-ho made movie history by winning a clutch of Oscars for Parasite, he held the statuettes together afterwards, making them kiss. There is something charming about Bong taking these longed-for, career-defining objects and bashing their golden heads together. We love our treasures – since antiquity people have carved and hoarded statuettes, stones, rocks, trinkets. This is a genealogy that runs from Stonehenge to today’s most Cartier-obsessed rapper. Parasite is unashamedly about wealth, class, longing, scamming: what we want and what we’ll do to get it. Incidentally, Elon Musk, the richest man on Earth, loved the film. I wonder who he rooted for in its frenetic final scenes – the closest thing I’ve seen to class warfare on screen.

At the heart of Bong’s taut tragi-comedy is a rock,

‘The Green Knight’ Trailer: Dev Patel, David Lowery Dazzle With Indie Fantasy Epic

‘The Green Knight’ Trailer: Dev Patel, David Lowery Dazzle With Indie Fantasy Epic
The last time an Arthurian legend was brought to the big screen was Guy Ritchie’s 2017 megaflop “King Arthur,” starring Charlie Hunnam in the title role, but something tells us that the upcoming “Green Knight” won’t suffer a similar fate. An adaptation of “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,” the upcoming A24 release is the latest directorial effort from David Lowery, who has been on a critically-acclaimed streak thanks to films like “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints,” “Pete’s Dragon,” “A Ghost Story,” and “The Old Man & the Gun.”

The Green Knight” is easily Lowery’s most ambitious effort to date, and the first trailer below teases the director has successfully pulled off a mood-heavy indie fantasy epic. “The Green Knight” stars Dev Patel as Sir Gawain, King Arthur’s reckless nephew, who embarks on a quest to confront and defeat the eponymous green-skinned stranger (viewers get a first look

Which is Better? #6 – Netflix vs. Amazon Prime Video

  • Nerdly
Welcome back to another edition of “Which is Better” here on Nerdly. I tend to, in past articles focus on specific movies or series’ or television shows, but I thought, for the pure hell of it, to pit two big streaming services against each other and decide which is the better of the two.

Now, streaming has become a huge deal. Everyone and their grandmother has some sort of media streaming in their home, be it Spotify for their music needs, Game Pass or Ps Now for their video game desires, or the aforementioned Netflix or Amazon Prime Video for their film and television binging. Some of us nerds even have all of the above, but the less said about us the better.

Netflix is the big-boy in town and has the largest subscriber base of any media streaming service going, with over 167 million paying customers worldwide and growing. When

Watch as Adam Sandler Trolls the Oscars in Hilarious Independent Spirit Awards Speech
Adam Sandler delivered a Nsfw acceptance speech at the Independent Spirit Awards where he took aim at the Academy Awards. Uncut Gems and Sandler were hyped up late last year to where it was almost certain that the actor/comedian would receive his first Oscar nomination. Critics and viewers praised Sandler's performance, along with the directorial work of the Safdie Brothers. However, when the Academy announced the nominations, Uncut Gems and Sandler were nowhere to be found, leading many to believe that the project as a whole was snubbed.

The Independent Spirit Awards, which recognizes projects made for $22.5 million or less, gave Uncut Gems three awards, including Adam Sandler's Best Actor award, The Safdie Brothers for Best Director, and Best Editing. When it was Sandler's turn to get up and deliver a speech, he did not hold back. After looking pretty surprised, he thanked his wife and children before pulling

Adam Sandler delivered a hilarious and self-deprecating acceptance speech at the Independent Spirit Awards after winning Best Male Lead for his role in Uncut Gems.

Watch: Adam Sandler’s Hilarious Best Male Lead Speech Kills at Independent Spirit Awards

Among the big winners at Saturday night's Independent Spirit Awards was Adam Sandler. Good ol' Sandman took home the award for Best Male Lead for his incredible performance in Uncut Gems. Sandler made a meal of his time on stage, using it to deliver one of the best acceptance speeches of this entire award season and maybe the best speech in the entire history of the Spirit Awards. As if possessed by the spirit of his iconic SNL character Opera Man, Sandler gave an acceptance speech which rambled but was nonetheless entertaining. After remembering how he got the less …

Judging by the Enthusiasm in the Indie Spirits Tent, ‘Parasite’ Should Have a Strong Oscars Night

Judging by the Enthusiasm in the Indie Spirits Tent, ‘Parasite’ Should Have a Strong Oscars Night
This year, in the chilly tent in Santa Monica the day before the Oscars, the Independent Spirit Awards went really indie. That meant that several high-profile contenders who did not land Oscar nominations scored Spirit sympathy votes. A24 dominated the field with seven Spirit Awards over three films, making up for their light showing at the Oscars.

The Lighthouse” started off winning two awards for mustachioed veteran Willem Dafoe and cinematographer Jarin Blaschke, followed by three for the Safdie brothers’ “Uncut Gems,” for Directing, and Editing and Adam Sandler — who scored two big standing ovations and brought down the house with his hilarious speech. “The Indie Spirits are the Best Personality award,” he said.

“Being an editor I am going to try and cut this short,” said Benny Safdie. “The two of us working together we always try to stay in sync.” Editor Ronald Bronstein said that working with the
