Trivia

When winning "Best Original Song", Sam Smith said during his acceptance speech that he read that actor Ian McKellen stated that there have been no openly gay Oscar winners before, meaning that Smith thought he was the first one to do so. While McKellen was actually referring to no openly gay actors winning "Best Actor", there haven been openly gay Oscar winners before Smith, also in the "Best Song" category, among them Melissa Etheridge, Howard Ashman, Stephen Sondheim and Elton John. Quotes

Andrew Whitehurst - Winner: Best Visual Effects: I'm really bad at predicting this, apparently. This is so utterly unexpected. Visual effects is massively a team game, more so maybe than any other department. And we have to thank people in two directions: we've got to thank the studio, we've got to thank the production. We've got to thank Alex for being an amazing director. We have to thank Alicia for being Ava. And we have to thank the teams of artists, production and technical personnel at Double Negative, Milk VFX, and Utopia, who are ...

Poorly executed show
29 February 2016 | by kearjrSee all my reviews

Considering this is Hollywood's big night of the year, I found the show sorely lacking in execution.

1) wasting time with run-on and overly staged presentations; 2) lost time for honorees to speak due to length of time it took them to get to the stage; 3) disrespect to the honorees with attempts to play them off with the music.

2) At some point someone...hello director... should have decided to simply have the presenters already on stage ready to go and allocated the saved time to the people who actually got awards.

3) Also, if truly necessary to have music as a cue to get ready to end...again hello director... how about softly introducing it and gradually building up as time went on rather than just starting to play while honorees were mid sentence.

4)And finally, how about those last two songs getting some airtime.

Louis CK gets a shout out for helping to make sense of a part of the Awards, but here again, he got more respect than the Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy got because she was interrupted by the music.
