It's Christmas Day on a remote human colony, and the Doctor is hiding from carols and comedy antlers. But when the Time Lord's help is requested, he finds himself recruited into River Song's squad and hurled into a fast and frantic chase across the galaxy! King Hydroflax (Greg Davies) is furious and his giant robot bodyguard is out-of-control and coming for them all! Will Nardole (Matt Lucas) survive? And when will River work out who the Doctor is? All will be revealed on a starliner full of galactic super-villains and at a destination the Doctor has been avoiding for a very long time...
Prior to appearing in this episode as Nardole, Matt Lucas guest starred on the American series 'Community' as a die hard fan of "Professor Space Time," which is a parody version of 'Doctor Who.' See more »
In her first appearance in the series, River questions the Tenth Doctor about the crash of the Byzantium, an adventure she shared with the Eleventh Doctor. While this makes sense if she is mistaking the Tenth Doctor for a Twelfth or later incarnation, her photo collection in this story has all of the prior Doctors in chronological order. This, coupled with her insistence that the photos are the only incarnations of the Doctor, implies that she does know the correct order, and therefore would also know that the Tenth Doctor would have no memory of the Byzantium. Changes to the opening credits were made for this Christmas time episode. There are added snowstorm effects that the Tardis flies through and in addition the circling 'planets' (visible just after the Alex Kingston credit) are in fact Christmas ornaments. See more »
Other than the doctor, River is my favourite Dr Who character. Of course, Alex Kingston has a lot to with that. She always elevates the episode. Perfect casting. This one was funny, often hilarious, but what makes it special is the most romantic ending I have yet seen. Somehow, I believe only Peter Capaldi (and possibly Chris Eccleston) could have pulled it off. And you don't even need to be a Whovian to enjoy it.
