Mulan May Bomb In China As Boycott Against The Movie Continues

Mulan May Bomb In China As Boycott Against The Movie Continues
Disney’s production line of live-action remakes from their extensive back catalogue of animated classics have proven to be a hugely lucrative revenue stream for the Mouse House in recent years, and one that looks set to continue with next month’s release of Mulan. A lot of these remakes have come in for criticism for failing to bring anything new to their beloved stories, instead relying on established dialogue, plot and character moments in an attempt to cash in on that sweet, sweet nostalgia.

However, Mulan looks set to be an entirely different proposition, and not just because it will be the first of the live-action Disney remakes to land a PG-13 rating. Director Niki Caro has intentionally omitted the songs and diminutive sidekick from the fan-favorite 1998 animation, and instead looks to have fashioned a sweeping historical epic, which just so happens to share some DNA with a Disney classic.

New ‘Mulan’ TV Spot Airs as the Movie Faces Strong Opposition from Boycott Movement
Disney's take on Mulan is due out in theaters Stateside on March 27th, telling a tale inspired by the narrative poem “The Ballad of Mulan." The story, previously adapted by Disney in animated form to much acclaim back in 1998, centers on the title character, a young woman who masquerades as a male soldier in order to defend her family and her country while fulfilling the emperor's military decree. And while that story is certainly a classic, the one that's unfolding behind the scenes of Disney's live-action adaptation is much more pressing. For background, Hong …

‘Call of the Wild’ Leads Race Against ‘Sonic’ With $27.8 Million Opening at Box Office

‘Call of the Wild’ Leads Race Against ‘Sonic’ With $27.8 Million Opening at Box Office
20th Century Studios’ “The Call of the Wild” is doing better than industry projections expected, with Saturday morning estimates now projecting a $27.8 million opening for the family adaptation of Jack London’s short story.

If that result holds after Saturday matinees, it will be enough to take the No. 1 spot from Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog,” which is currently estimated for a $24.8 million second weekend. That’s a 57% drop from the film’s $58 million opening weekend, but consistent with the $25.1 million second weekend earned by “Detective Pikachu” last May. It also makes “Sonic” the first Paramount release in over a year to cross the $100 million domestic mark, the last being the “Transformers” spinoff “Bumblebee.”

The Call of the Wild” is receiving strong audience reception with an A- on CinemaScore and a 4/5 on Postrak. Critics have also been somewhat positive with a 63% Rotten Tomatoes score. However, the film’s heavy use

Bad Education Trailer: Hugh Jackman Headlines HBO's School Scandal Expose
HBO has released the trailer for Bad Education. This is the latest effort from Hugh Jackman, who is best known as Wolverine but, since hanging up the claws, has been making some interesting choices outside of the superhero realm. Here, he's playing a real-life superintendent who got caught up in quite the scandal. Jackman looks to be on his best game here, alongside a killer ensemble cast, with director Cory Finley (Thoroughbreds) at the helm.

The trailer kicks off by laying at the crux of the story at hand. If a place, in this case, Long Island, has a great school district, it means good things for that place. Property value skyrockets. Amenities spring up. It's important. We get a sense of Hugh Jackman's character Frank, who seems to have his heart in the right place, at least on the surface, as he's fighting to get their district to the number one spot.

The Batman Director Hints at Year One Inspiration

The Batman Director Hints at Year One Inspiration
Following last week's reveal of the Batsuit from the upcoming comic book movie The Batman, director Matt Reeves has now taken to social media to post a panel from a particular comic book arc that could well hint at where he is drawing inspiration from. The image is from Frank Miller's much-celebrated Batman: Year One and was accompanied by a message from the director to Bruce Wayne.

Happy Birthday, Bruce pic.twitter.com/zJ4q9kXcIn

— Matt Reeves (@mattreevesLA) February 20, 2020

Very sweet. The panel in question is from early on in the Batman: Year One story, and depicts Bruce Wayne having returned to Gotham after years of training abroad and heading out on a recon mission into the East End, one of the worst parts of the city. He has yet to adopt his Dark Knight alter ego at this point, and is merely ruminating on the best

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Documentary Explores the Groundbreaking Video Game

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Documentary Explores the Groundbreaking Video Game
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater video game series is the focus of a new documentary. Pretending I'm a Superman, which is named after the ska-punk Goldfinger song from the first installment, is the title of the documentary. Tony Hawk is a skateboarding legend and can largely still walk around unnoticed in crowds, which is something he enjoys. However, a lot more people might recognize him in public when Pretending I'm a Superman opens in theaters later this year.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater was the game that even the non-gamers picked up on. The skaters and the surfers finally had a game that was made for them and that had broader appeal. This was a far cry from Skate or Die and T&c Surf Design. It had the eclectic soundtrack with everything from punk rock to hip hop to new wave music from the 1980s. It was real music that skaters

Mulan Star Liu Yifei Terrified the Boys On Set with Her Warrior-Like Strength
The next live-action adaptation on Disney's agenda is the Chinese fantasy epic Mulan. The movie follows Mulan as she joins the Imperial Army in order to save her ailing father from having to serve. Disguising herself as a man, Mulan becomes a hero during a battle with Northern Invaders in China.

Starring actress Yifei Liu as Mulan, the movie's director Niki Caro has recently offered up some details on the grueling audition that Yifei was put through in order to win the role, and why such extreme measures were taken.

"Because I needed a warrior, and I needed a partner. So she did this grueling audition and then we sent her straight to the physical trainer to do an equally grueling physical assessment. Weights, push-ups, pull-ups, everything. She was brilliant in the dramatic part of the audition, and in the physical part she never stopped, never faulted. I knew at

Mulan Is the First Live-Action Disney Remake to Get a PG-13 Rating

Mulan Is the First Live-Action Disney Remake to Get a PG-13 Rating
Up until this very second in time, Disney has been content with every single one of its live-action remakes based on a classic animated movie getting a PG or G rating. That all changes with their next live-action remake. Mulan is getting ready for its March 25 debut. And it has just been given a PG-13 rating. The first of these live-action remakes to earn such an honor.

Mulan is treating its source material much more seriously than previous live-action Disney remakes. Gone are all of the musical numbers. And the Eddie Murphy voiced dragon Mushu has also landed in the dumpster, making this a more realistic, streamlined take on the classic story.

And with that comes a more adult rating. It's not an R, but the Motion Picture Associate of America has decided that no one under the age of 13 should be able to see Mulan unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.

‘Mulan’ Is Disney’s First Live-Action Remake to Get a PG-13 Rating
“Mulan” may not be for very young children, as it’s become the first Disney live-action remake to receive a PG-13 rating.

The new take on the Disney classic got the rating from the Motion Picture Association of America due to the “sequences of violence” apparently depicted in the film. All previous live-action remakes from the studio have received a G or PG rating, and 2017’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” was Disney’s most recent film to be labeled PG-13.

Mulan” is straying away from the model of previous remakes like “Aladdin,” “The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Cinderella.” Unlike the other live-action takes, “Mulan’s” trailers depicted the film without its famous musical numbers and removed some of the characters featured in the original 1998 animated version, including Mushu, Mulan’s dragon companion who was voiced by Eddie Murphy. Two trailers have been released,

What Mulan's PG-13 Rating Means

What Mulan's PG-13 Rating Means
Kayti Burt Feb 19, 2020

Mulan's PG-13 rating sets it apart from other live-action Disney remakes—one of many signs this movie is looking to do something new.

From its inception, Disney's upcoming Mulan feature film has felt different from its live-action adaptation brethren. The announcement that it would not be a movie musical was the first sign that, unlike other recent adaptations— such as Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, or Aladdin—Mulan isn't looking to rest on its nostalgia laurels. With every trailer we've seem for Mulan, this impression has been reinforced. Now with the recent announcement that Mulan will be rated PG-13, the first of the recent adaptation not to be rated PG (a more inclusive rating for obvious reasons), we have another major indicator that Mulan could be something new.

What will this PG-13 rating mean for viewers? Well, if the trailers are anything to go by,
