Storyline

The continuing story Ted is telling his kids about how he met their mother picks up in 2020, when his gang of friends were largely the same as at Robin and Barney's wedding, except... Ted and their mother still have not made it to the altar, despite both of the kids already having been born, the delay due to timing issues and wedding priorities. Marshall finally receives that much wanted call telling him that he has been offered a judgeship. It's a few years after Robin and Barney's divorce, with Barney having returned to his carousing ways. A major event that occurred in carrying out the new plays in his playbook ended up having what would be the most profound change in his mentality. The "except" part concerns Robin, who is now largely out of their lives, despite the six of them vowing that they would be there for each other for all the big events. Ted looks back once again to his initial meeting with their mother and why it seemed like destiny to be with her, before he concludes ... Written by Huggo

Alternate Versions

An alternate ending was leaked online months after the show finished, and was eventually released on the Season 9 DVD. Known colloquially as "the happy ending", it features no new footage, but instead montages throughout the entire series to show exactly how Ted met the Mother, and changes the fates of all the characters. It should've ended with the, "And kids, that's how i met your mother"
1 April 2014 | by shaer_ahmedSee all my reviews

At last the 9 year journey has been ended. We had been with them this whole journey, we laughed with them, we shared their grief, we learnt from them. The end should've come two years ago, but at last it's here.

It's the first TV serial I started watching back in 2010. It's the serial I rated 10/10 after finishing the 3rd season. But it's sad to say, I couldn't even rate the series finale even 5! They had all the ingredients to make a perfect ending. They could've make a happily ever after ending or a notebook ending or a nostalgic ending or a shocking ending. They did make a shocking ending though; shocking that the final moment of a series finale can suck this much! All the love for the mother they had built up in our heart, they can't just throw it away like this! Of course we wanted this ending, but that was so two seasons before! My greatest regret is why I did not stop watching after 18:14! The truthfulness of Barney made things no better, the horn had never been a more disappointing sight. But the umbrella scene couldn't be any more perfect, 'You are the love of my life' part couldn't be any more loving, the apartment scene couldn't be anymore grim. :( They made the kids scene 9 years ago, yet it never occurred to them that we might not like the ending after we've seen so much? :/ There won't be anymore waiting for Tuesday morning, downloading the newest episode after waking up. Goodbye, Ted, Barney, Marshall, Lily and... T.M. :') ‪#‎HIMYMFarewell‬
