‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ Leads Box Office As Sony Makes a Stand
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” leads the Top 10 for its third and probably final weekend, with a strong $451 million domestic and $1 billion worldwide. It led six films from only two companies — Disney and Sony, with three each — that captured the top six spots. That is unheard of.

Sony took nos. 2-4 with “Jumanji: The Next Level,” “Little Women,” and “The Grudge,” which as of now are ahead of “Frozen II” and “Spies in Disguise.”.

Of note is that with the new year, Disney now includes films they inherited from its 20th Century Fox acquisition in its studio total. Former Fox titles are a significant part of the company’s lineup ahead, starting with the release of “Underwater” this Friday.

The year started just about equal to 2019’s first (around $140 million total), down a little less than 30% from last weekend. That it came with only one new release — the low-budget

From ‘Little Women’ and ‘Uncut Gems’ to ‘Star Wars’: It’s the Most Lucrative Time of the Year

From ‘Little Women’ and ‘Uncut Gems’ to ‘Star Wars’: It’s the Most Lucrative Time of the Year
Little Women” and the animated “Spies in Disguise” are this year’s Christmas Day openers, along with the national expansion of “Uncut Gems.” None of these will be the top grosser at any point of the five-day period Wednesday through Sunday, but each has a shot at reaping the benefits of the movie year’s most lucrative time frame.

Stakes are high this time of year; unpredictability is higher. The order of films can differ day by day. Competing will be the assumed #1 “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” as well as “Jumanji: The Next Level” and “Frozen II.” And then there’s “Cats” — could notoriety plus family-friendly timing trigger a surprise rebound?

“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”

“Skywalker” will certainly top all movies; even if it fell by two-thirds, it would still gross about $60 million for the three days. Its Monday figure was a terrific $29 million, which belies

‘High School Musical: The Musical – The Series’ Review: A Star Is Born at Disney+

I don’t think I can fully convey the contempt that swept through this newsroom when Disney announced one of its launch shows for Disney+ was going to be “High School Musical: The Musical – The Series.”

First off: the title. The Cms for this website has a headline character limit, y’know? And that title takes up about 85 percent of it. A colon and a dash? Stop it. Second: Oh my God, another spin on “High School Musical?” Humanity really isn’t going to top Zac Efron pirouetting around a golf course in “High School Musical 2.” Third: end-stage capitalism. Are there no new ideas in this world? Disney now owns everything and now they’re re-franchising another franchise? Help. Fourth: the hashtag — which is, for the record, #Hsmtmts.

So imagine my delighted surprise when at 10:16 in the first episode — yes, I wrote the timestamp down — high school fashion queen

Patriotic Films Squeeze Out Hollywood Fare as China Celebrates National Holiday

  • Variety
A parade of patriotic films is set to march into Chinese cineplexes this month, crowding out Hollywood fare in a display of how firmly the entertainment industry remains under the control of the government. China may be the world’s second-biggest movie market after the U.S., but as far as its Communist rulers are concerned, politics trump economics.

The National Day holiday, which extends from Oct. 1-7, is one of the country’s peak moviegoing periods, and typically marks a time when authorities impose an unofficial blackout on foreign titles so that local ones get a boost. This year, the holiday has thundered in with even greater fanfare — and censorship — because 2019 marks a key milestone for the Communist Party: the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic after a bloody civil war. That has resulted in a theatrical lineup stocked with overtly nationalistic films approved by

Sound Familiar? ‘A’ Listers In Voice Acting Roles

Sometimes you know who you’re listening to. For a handful of actors – Sam Elliott, Morgan Freeman and James Earl Jones in particular – their voice is their trademark, unmistakable and a nice little earner when they don’t feel like being in front of the camera. But sometimes you don’t. Recent years have seen a growing trend for big names providing the voices in major animations, but can we tell? The Lego Movie 2, released in cinemas on Friday, is packed with them – Chris Pratt on double duty, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill (who’s also in the third How To Train Your Dragon) and Ralph Fiennes, Jason Momoa and Bruce Willis are there as well, but there’s no prizes for recognising them. If you see the film, you’ll know why…

Here’s six top actors whose voices may have passed you by…..

French Theatrical Admissions Drop in 2018, but Box Office Holds Steady

  • Variety
After recording its third-highest number in the last 50 years in 2017, French theatrical admissions are on track for a 4% drop this year, with an estimated 201 million sold. In dollar terms, however, the French box office is expected to clock in at about €1.3 billion ($1.5 billion), on par with last year, bolstered by the increase of ticket sales for premium large formats such as Imax, Dolby Cinema and 4Dx.

While fewer Hollywood blockbusters drew in French audiences compared with last year, two domestic films managed to sell more than 5 million tickets (grossing more than $37 million each) and four ranked in the top 10. A pair of French comedies released by Pathé, “Les Tuche 3” and Dany Boon’s “La ch’tite famille,” ranked second and third, behind Disney’s “Incredibles 2,” which took in about $44.5 million.

The other top-grossing French films of 2018 were Gilles Lellouche’s “Sink or Swim” (pictured), a star-driven dramedy about a men’s synchronized swimming team,

What Do ‘Black Panther,’ Childish Gambino Share? A Swede — 4x Grammy Nominee Ludwig Göransson

What Do ‘Black Panther,’ Childish Gambino Share? A Swede — 4x Grammy Nominee Ludwig Göransson
In looking for what “Black Panther” and Childish Gambino have in common, you might not look first to Swedish heritage. But a transplant from that country, composer Ludwig Göransson, managed a surprising and possibly unprecedented coup in this year’s Grammy nominations, earning one nod for his work as a film scorer on “Black Panther,” and three more as Donald Glover’s producing and songwriting partner in Childish Gambino.

Göransson’s “Panther” score — much of it rooted in the West African sounds he recorded while researching the project — makes its stand in the Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media category. In his other life as a member of Childish Gambino, Göransson’s work with Glover pulled in three nominations, two of them for the acclaimed single “This is America,” in the all-genre Record of the Year and Song of the Year categories. The additional Childish Gambino nomination came for “Feels

John Cena to Replace Sylvester Stallone in Jackie Chan’s Action-Thriller ‘Project X’
John Cena has joined Jackie Chan in the independent action-thriller “Project X,” set at a Chinese-run oil refinery in the Middle East.

Cena is replacing Sylvester Stallone in the movie, which had been developed as “Ex-Baghdad.” Scott Waugh is directing from a script by Arash Amel.

Chan will portray a Chinese private security contractor who is tasked with extracting oil workers from a refinery that’s been attacked. He teams up with a former U.S. Marine (Cena), when he learns that the attackers’ real plan is to steal the oil. Chan will also produce “Project X” along with Joe Tam, Esmond Ren, and Hans Canosa.

Cena was last seen in “Blockers” and will star in “Bumblebee” and Universal’s “The Janson Directive.” Cena made his name as a WWE star before starting another career as a movie actor more than a decade ago with “The Marine” in 2006. His credits include “12 Rounds,

What’s Next for Disney as John Lasseter’s Exit Looms?

  • Variety
On June 5, Disney hosted a lavish premiere bash for “Incredibles 2” at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. There were jugglers and acrobats, balloon-making stations, performers on stilts and waiters circulating with snow cones and candy apples. Disney chief Bob Iger was there, as were director Brad Bird and voice stars Craig T. Nelson and Holly Hunter. But one powerhouse figure was conspicuously missing in action — John Lasseter, the creative guru credited with making Pixar a household name and reinvigorating Disney’s animation division.

Three days later, in a classic Friday-afternoon news dump, Disney announced that Lasseter would be leaving the company at the end of the year. He had been exiled for months in the wake of complaints of sexual harassment, including claims of kissing female employees on the lips and drunkenly pursuing them at wrap parties.

Lasseter’s forced departure had a feeling of inevitability. In the #MeToo/Time’s Up era,

‘A Quiet Place’ Sets Saudi Arabia Release; First For Paramount & Horror In Burgeoning Market
Exclusive: Paramount/Platinum Dunes’ A Quiet Place continues to break ground. The John Krasinski-helmed thriller recently crossed $300M at the global box office, on a reported $17M budget, and was a rare horror title to make it past the Chinese censors. Now, it’s got bragging rights to being the first Paramount and first horror title to get a Saudi Arabia release slot as the Kingdom opens movie theaters following a 35-year ban.

A Quiet Place passed the local censors just this week, I’ve learned, and will go out on Friday with what I understand is a 15+ certificate, although an official ratings system has yet to be officially ratified.

The film that stars Krasinski and Emily Blunt, and which has grossed $133M at the international box office before France and Japan release, will have one to two shows per day beginning at 9Pm owing to the current holy month of Ramadan.

‘Solo’ Composer John Powell Reveals His Process for Tackling a ‘Star Wars’ Movie
At about the time that John Williams was conducting the world premiere of his “Adventures of Han” theme Wednesday night with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, his “Solo: A Star Wars Story” collaborator John Powell was receiving a lifetime achievement award from Ascap in Beverly Hills.

It was a bit of unplanned East Coast-West Coast synergy for the film, which opens Friday. Yet in another sense, it was also the Hollywood film-music business in microcosm: The iconic American composer unveiling his latest addition to the “Star Wars” canon that helped make him famous, as the British composer who scored “Solo” was being recognized as among the most respected of those currently working in the field.

Both are quiet, unassuming, and very hard-working composers, although of different generations and from very different backgrounds. “Solo,” the second standalone “Star Wars” movie after 2016’s “Rogue One,” had a complex production history – all the more
