Pharrell Williams Boards Pro-Skateboarder Feature ‘North Hollywood’ As Producer
Exclusive: Thirteen-time Grammy winner and two-time Oscar nominee Pharrell Williams has signed on to produce the Mikey Alfred-directed drama North Hollywood, which is billed as being the first movie ever about becoming a pro skateboarder.

The film was submitted to Sundance but was rejected. Instead of letting that stop everyone involved, the filmmakers decided to hold their own buyers screening, which is set for Thursday in Los Angeles. They posted that news on Instagram and are generating great buzz (see below).

Williams will produce with Mimi Valdés, Malcolm Washington, Kevin Turen, Harrison Kreiss, and Carmen Cuba. North Hollywood stars Ryder McLaughlin, Aramis Hudson, Nico Hiraga, Miranda Cosgrove, Angus Cloud and Vince Vaughn.

Williams has produced some notable movies including Rick Famuyiwa’s Sundance and Cannes feature Dope; 20th Century Fox’s $236M-grossing Hidden Figures, for which Williams received an Oscar Best Picture nomination; and the 2017 biopic Roxanne, Roxanne, about

Brace Yourself for The First Minions 2: The Rise of Gru Poster

  • MovieWeb
Universal Pictures has revealed a new poster for Minions: The Rise of Gru. This comes just after the studio surprised everyone with a Minions 2 Super Bowl commercial, with a full trailer on the way later this week. Aside from knowing that this would chronicle how Gru came to power, the movie has been largely kept under wraps until now. This poster comes with something of a warning for what's to come.

The Minions: The Rise of Gru poster showcases one of Gru's loyal Minions, Otto, in a pair of overalls, looking quite a bit younger than we're used to seeing. The little yellow fella is also rocking braces, which is new. This is a prequel, after all. It has a blue and yellow, tie-dye background that makes it almost look a bit trippy. The poster features the tagline, "Brace yourself." For what, precisely, we're not sure, but one has

‘The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part’ hopes to redeem egregious Oscar snub from 5 years ago

Warner Animation Group is on a quest for redemption. Back in 2014 they were delivered one of the biggest shocks in recent Oscar memory when “The Lego Movie” was left out of the category of Best Animated Feature. Now they’re looking to finally get this franchise in the race with the sequel, “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part,” directed by Mike Mitchell.

The film picks up where the first film left off, with Emmet (Chris Pratt) attempting to make peace with the Duplo aliens but a misunderstanding leads to a battle in Bricksburg. Five years later, Bricksburg is now an apocalyptic relic of what it used to be due to repeated attacks. Emmet tries to remain upbeat with Lucy (Elizabeth Banks) but she is much more worried about future attacks and tells Emmet he needs to be ready for them. Lucy and several friends of hers are kidnapped and

Oscars 2: Revenge of the Sequel? Best Animated Feature may have more franchise follow-ups than ever before
Toy Story 4” currently leads our Oscar predictions for Best Animated Feature. That’s probably not too surprising since the film comes from Oscar juggernaut Pixar, earned great reviews, and grossed more than $1 billion worldwide. But Oscar voters have shown a bias against animated sequels for as long as the category has been around. That could change this year, however, and the fourth “Toy Story” is only the tip of the spear. There could be more animated sequels nominated this year than ever before.

There have never been more than two franchise follow-ups nominated in the same year. In 2011 the academy nominated “Kung Fu Panda 2” and “Puss in Boots”; the latter wasn’t a sequel, per se, but it was a spinoff of the “Shrek” movies, so it arguably counts. And just this past year both “Incredibles 2” and “Ralph Breaks the Internet” made the cut. “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” ended up winning,

Playmobil: The Movie Review

  • HeyUGuys
If Playmobil: The Movie had a (memorable) theme song it would be Everything is Meh. Not offensive, actively unpleasant or particularly poor, just…meh. In fact, Playmobil: The Movie is exactly the sort of film which springs to mind when someone tells you that a Playmobil movie exists.

Marla and Charlie Brenner make a formidable team. When the siblings play, the world falls away and they are free to roam their imaginary Playmobil universe together. The Knight and The Viking are the tiny alter egos who unite and fight at their command, nothing is impossible for this adventurous pair.

Marla (Anya Taylor-Joy) has an appetite for adventure in the real world too. Elaborate travel plans festoon her bedroom and the first big song of the movie is peppered with excited exclamations over all the bright things the future will bring. Then tragically the bubble bursts.

Four years later childish things

Box Office: ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ Soars to $25.2 Million on Fourth of July

Box Office: ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ Soars to $25.2 Million on Fourth of July
Moviegoers’ Spidey-senses have been tingling in a good way as Sony’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home” showed plenty of power at North American multiplexes, soaring to $25.2 million on the Fourth of July — the second-highest Independence Day take of all time.

Transformers” generated the biggest Independence Day domestic gross in 2007 with $29 million, followed by “Despicable Me 2” in 2013 with $24.5 million and 2012’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” with $23.3 million.

Spider-Man: Far From Home” has taken in more than $91 million in its first three days and could be on track to take in at least $60 million more during the Friday-Sunday weekend. That should leave the Marvel tentpole well above studio forecasts, which have remained at $125 million for the first six days.

Sony reported Friday that “Spider-Man: Far From Home” has grossed $310 million globally in its first seven days of release with $218.5 million from international markets. The tentpole opened last weekend in China with an impressive $97 million.

Andre Caraco & Paul Noble Named Sony Global Marketing Co-Presidents; Mari Gastineau Upped To Evp

  • Deadline
Exclusive: Over the last year Sony has been globalizing the studio’s marketing department in how they approach, position and promote their tentpoles. As such, Deadline learned today that industry vets Andre Caraco and Paul Noble have been named Sony Co-Presidents of Global Marketing. In addition, Mari Gastineau is being promoted to Evp, Global Marketing and will support Caraco and Noble on daily marketing ops.

The studio has a hot film on their hands today with the opening of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. The pic was already on fire this weekend with a near $111M gross from China, Hong Kong and Japan. In an age when reviving beloved franchises at the box office is key for new generations and growing overseas markets, Sony has accomplished that feat three times with Spider-Man, twice with Jumanji (the Dec. 13 sequel Jumanji: The Next Level dropped a trailer yesterday) and

Can ‘Toy Story 4’ break the animated sequel Oscar barrier? Or will ‘Frozen 2’ melt the blockade? [Poll]

Can ‘Toy Story 4’ break the animated sequel Oscar barrier? Or will ‘Frozen 2’ melt the blockade? [Poll]
Given that critics were rather rhapsodic for “Toy Story 4,” as reflected by the 98% fresh ranking on Rotten Tomatoes, there might be a chance that it follow the path of its 2010 Pixar predecessor, “Toy Story 3,” and win Best Animated Feature — thus making history as just the second cartoon sequel to do so. But it could face stiff competition from another likely monster sequel, Disney ‘s “Frozen 2,” opening Nov. 27. Its 2013 forerunner not only won the animated feature category, the original “Frozen” still reigns as the No. 1 grossing animated film worldwide with $1.3 billion in ticket sales.

You would think, considering the current epidemic of Hollywood sequelitis, that Oscar voters would warm up to the idea of giving another trophy to a franchise film in the category. Then again, part of the reason “Toy Story 3” is the first and only follow-up movie to take the prize in the 18 years that the

‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ & The ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Halo Effect: Web-Slinger Sequel Seeing $170M+ 6-Day Opening

  • Deadline
Any sweat Sony is apt to endure this weekend with the potential under-performance of Men in Black: International will be extremely alleviated in less than three weeks when their Marvel Cinematic Universe co-production Spider-Man: Far From Home puts summer back on track with a $170M-plus opening over six days.

And there’s a bulk of historical and current B.O. and social diagnostics to support that projection. Read on.

One of the top tracking services has Far From Home at $165M, and more aggressive box office analysts believe the movie has a shot to make $200M (though some say that would be a shocker). Sony is being very conservative, with $154M for the Tuesday-Sunday spread.

We hear tracking demos for Far From Home are on par with Captain America: Civil War ($179.1M). Of course, Far From Home is skewing more male, with older females over 25 the lower demo — but even that is super strong,

‘Dark Phoenix’ a Disaster and ‘Pets 2’ Disappoints, but ‘Rocketman’ Takes On ‘Godzilla’

‘Dark Phoenix’ a Disaster and ‘Pets 2’ Disappoints, but ‘Rocketman’ Takes On ‘Godzilla’
We’ve seen a happy pattern in the early summer weeks as a handful of franchise titles soar: “Avengers: Endgame,” “Aladdin,” and “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum.” They’re doing solid work in cutting the 2019 deficit to around 6% and a little over $300 million. Meanwhile, “The Secret Life of Pets 2” and “Dark Phoenix” opened below their predecessors.

This tells us two stories: (1) The public is becoming more selective about their franchises but (2) as long as there’s sufficient volume of product, there’s hope for theaters even with films that drop in individual interest.

“Drop” is a relative term. “Pets 2” prevailed as top opener versus “Dark Phoenix,” which gives it bragging rights (the latter was projected to prevail). It did well enough: The “Pets 2” opening is on par with its predecessor, Universal’s animation unit Illumination kept its production cost to $80 million, and with early international results (most major countries still

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Is King Of Marvel Universe (For Now) – No. 1 In 2018 Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament
When it comes to evaluating the financial performance of top movies, it isn’t about what a film grosses at the box office. Pharrell Teams Up With Atomic Entertainment to Push ‘Edu-Tainment’ for Kids of Color
Pharrell Williams may best be known as a Grammy-winning musician, but the 45-year-old is singing a different tune these days as the executive producer of “Brainchild,” a new Netflix series that teaches kids about science, technology, and current events.

Co-created by Atomic Entertainment, the show is a spinoff of the New York-based production company’s “Brain Games,” which ran for seven seasons on National Geographic Channel and earned its team a Primetime Emmy nod for informational series or special in 2013.

For Williams, who shared his enthusiasm for the show in a post on Instagram last fall, “Brainchild” is a way to both educate and entertain young viewers, to spark an enthusiasm for learning. The show uses interactive games, experiments, and skits to push the core concepts and principles of Steam to its viewers at home. “I got involved with ‘Brainchild’ because there is a desperate need to raise awareness about
