While Dade University students, Brandon Fox and Jessica Taylor, make love in the car, it catches fire. She's found dead next to it, he's badly wounded and found in a ditch a few yards further. A saboteur had cut the break fluid. Eric finds fingerprints of car thief and mechanic Andrew Hillman, Brandon's rival for Jessica. Carbon monoxide levels imply a double suicide attempt. Jessica was deep in debt with Keith Reynolds's company. A vision of Eric's late mentor, Tim Speedle, leads to the discovery of the tube and rug used to murder them, with loan-shark Gary Hardwick's fingerprints. Tim's credit card was reactivated two weeks earlier. Then a shot eliminates a suspect. Written by KGF Vissers

Did You Know?

Alexx claims that Jess died from carbon monoxide poisoning, due to her distinctive pink coloration. The cause of the fire which destroyed the SUV was heat from the catalytic converter igniting brake fluid leaking under the car. The main purpose of a cat is to convert the oxides of nitrogen and carbon monoxide produced by petrol combustion into carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen and water. Unless the cat wasn't working (which if it ignited the brake fluid, it was), it is not possible to die from carbon monoxide poisoning in this way. In a confined space like the interior of the SUV, it might be possible to be suffocated from a lack of oxygen due to high levels of carbon dioxide, but a) that would not produce the pink discoloration on the body and b) the cat is producing oxygen as part of the catalytic process so the levels may never be high enough. Horatio Caine: [finds Eric at Tim Speedle's grave] Eric.
Eric Delko: [smiles] Took your advice, went to see someone.
Horatio Caine: What did he tell you?
Eric Delko: That I'm having transitory hallucinations; brain's building new pathways, still a bit messed up.
Horatio Caine: And that your condition would be ongoing?
Eric Delko: The fragments are still in there and he gave me some medication: should be OK.
Horatio Caine: [understanding] Eric, come to me next time, OK?
Eric Delko: [smiles] Yeah, I will.
[sees Tim standing in the distance]
Eric Delko: . I thought Speedle was back, now I'm saying goodbye all over again.
