Tavis Smiley Dropped by Live Entertainment Producer Amid Sexual Misconduct Allegations
The news keeps getting worse for PBS host Tavis Smiley. Just days after the network suspended him amid allegations of groping and exposing himself, Smiley was also dropped by Mills Entertainment, which had been promoting and producing his theatrical retelling of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The production itself has also been suspended, per The New York Times. “We take seriously the allegations,” the company said in a statement, adding that “in light of the recent allegations,” they would be “suspending our relationship with” Smiley. PBS has “indefinitely” suspended Tavis Smiley’s talk show program after sexual misconduct allegations against the host. “Effective today, PBS has indefinitely suspended distribution of ‘Tavis Smiley,’ produced by TS Media, an independent production company,” a PBS spokesperson told TheWrap. “PBS engaged an outside law firm to conduct an investigation immediately after learning of troubling allegations regarding Mr. Smiley. This investigation included interviews with witnesses as well as with Mr. Smiley. The inquiry uncovered multiple, credible allegations of conduct that is inconsistent with the values and standards of PBS, and the totality of this information led to today’s decision.

J.J. Abrams is teaming with filmmaker Tavis Smiley on an TV event series adaptation of Smiley's upcoming book "Before You Judge Me: The Triumph and Tragedy of Michael Jackson's Last Days" for Warner Bros. Television.

The novel is described as a "taut novelistic rendering of the final months in the pop superstar's life" and covers a lot including his constant hunt for privacy, and the pressures he endured as someone whose fame made him socially fragile and almost unable to live.

Smiley, Abrams, Ben Stephenson and David Brewington will executive produce. No network is yet attached, but the project will be shopped to broadcast, cable, premium cable and streaming services.
