A massive and surprisingly fun landmark in gaming history
16 February 2019 | by OlicosmicSee all my reviews

For those wondering why there is no rating for this from me, rating this is damn near impossible. I'm not sure whether to give this a medium or low score for being astronomically primitive by todays standards, or a high score for it being such an important part of gaming history. I mean, what else can I say? It's Pong. I'm sure we've all played one form of it someway or another. It's a very simple game of hitting a ball (or square) back and forth between you and an opponent to see which can make it pass the opponents paddle. Pretty much an over simplified game of Ping Pong, Soccer, or Hockey. What's crazy is how fun this game still is to this day. This game is more than 25 years older than me, and even I can't help but become addicted to the competitive and fun nature of it. But, I'd be flat out lying if I said that it holds up that well, because for as much fun this game is, it shows it's age. There's little to nothing presentation wise, because there's only 2 paddles, the scores, and a ball, all of which are made of singular squares. This game also has no depth whatsoever, as there's not much, if anything, in terms of incentives to keep playing, if any. I understand that this is due to how old this is, but for someone else who isn't as big of a classic gamer, like me, may find it hard to really find that much enjoyment out of this. I suppose that since it very well might be one of, if not the first video game ever made, the primitiveness may be passable, considering it was released in 1972. But still, this is what it says it is and nothing more, which is totally fine, but it may fail to leave that much of an impact to those who haven't played it or heard of it yet nowadays. Still, this is a massive and surprisingly fun landmark in gaming history that should forever be remembered as a classic of all classics, even if it obviously hasn't aged well.
