Storyline

Director Billy Wilder adds a new and intriguing twist to the personality of intrepid detective Sherlock Holmes. One thing hasn't changed however: Holmes' crime-solving talents. Holmes and Dr. Watson take on the case of a beautiful woman whose husband has vanished. The investigation proves strange indeed, involving six missing midgets, villainous monks, a Scottish castle, the Loch Ness monster, and covert naval experiments. Can the sleuths make sense of all this and solve the mystery? Written by Joel Preuninger <Jhpreunin@aol.com>

Trivia

One of this movie's main movie posters featured a long text preamble that read: "What you don't know about Sherlock Holmes has made a great motion picture. Everyone knows about the lightning-quick mind, the dazzling wit, the magnifying glass. But what about the little glass vials he so cunningly kept hidden. And what about the security blunder that almost cost the British Empire its navy. And what about the woman who spent the night with him." See more »

Quotes

Holmes: Mrs Hudson! MRS HUDSON!
Mrs. Hudson: Yes? What is it? What have I done now?
Holmes: There is something missing from my desk!
Mrs. Hudson: Missing?
Holmes: Something very crucial!
Mrs. Hudson: What?
Holmes: Dust! You have been tidying up against my explicit orders!
Mrs. Hudson: Oh look, I made sure I hadn't disturbed anything.
Holmes: Dust, Mrs Hudson, is an essential part of my filing system. By the thickness of it I can date any document immediately.
Mrs. Hudson: Well, some of the dust was THIS thick.

Alternate Versions

One edit for British TV trims the scene where Watson berates Holmes about his cocaine abuse. This keeps Watson's question, 'Aren't you ashamed of yourself?', but cuts Holmes' answer, 'Thoroughly. This will take care of it.' See more »

DVD treasures

This has always been one of my favorite movies. A good take on Holmes, a witty story, a bittersweet ending and music by Miklos Rozsa that sets the tone perfectly. When I saw it had become available on DVD I rushed out and bought it, without even checking to see the extras on the disc. The quality of the print is all right, but there are times it should have been better. The extras just kept getting better. Christopher Lee remembers his times playing Holmes in other films as well as Mycroft in this movie. Then there's the film editor who mentions parts of the movie I never heard of. Then the disc shows the deleted scenes in various forms and it's amazing what was cut. There is only one little bit I feel would have explained things in the movie better, but all the scenes are interesting. A must for people who love this film and want a wealth of information.
