‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ Review: A Network Sings a Different Tune

A very strange and welcome thing has happened this TV season: The broadcast networks are trying again.

You remember the broadcast networks, don’t you? They were mighty beasts that once dominated the earth, with impressive names like National Broadcasting Company or Columbia Broadcasting System (NBC or CBS to their friends). For more than 50 years, they were television, for all intents and purposes, representing everything good, bad, and in-between about the medium. More often than not, they opted for programming that would offend and/or confuse the fewest number of potential viewers.

Ann Dowd & Allison Tolman in Bowie-Wormhole 'Speed of Life' Trailer

"I think when David Bowie died, the universe broke." Giant Pics has debuted a trailer for the indie drama Speed of Life, the latest film from film critic ("Just Seen It") / filmmaker Liz Manashil. This premiered at the Nashville Film Festival, and will be available on VOD this month. The film centers around David Bowie's death in 2016, which causes a rift in time and space. It starts in 2016 with a couple, June and Edward, but Edward falls into a wormhole created by Bowie's passing. Then it jumps to 2040, when Edward suddenly reappears in her life after years of mourning his disappearance. Ann Dowd stars as the older June, with Allison Tolman playing her in 2016. The cast includes Ray Santiago, Jeff Perry, Vella Lovell, Sean Wright, and Christine Weatherup. A strange story for a film, but looks like it has a few good moments. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Liz Manashil's Speed of Life,

‘Family (2018)’ Review

  • Nerdly
Stars: Taylor Schilling, Kate McKinnon, Bryn Vale, Fabrizio Zacharee Guido, Allison Tolman, Brian Tyree Henry, Matt Walsh, Eric Edelstein, Peter Horton, Jessie Ennis, Karan Kendrick, Juan Gaspard | Written and Directed by Laura Steinel

I was drawn to 2018′s Family initially by the lead-casting of Taylor Schilling, mainly because of how much I liked her throughout the seasons of Orange is the New Black. I also found an appeal in the synopsis, which sounded fresh, interesting and fun. Who doesn’t dig that kind of thing? As for the brief idea here, we follow Kate (Schilling), a Senior V.P who is very focused on her career, but when her estranged brother asks her, last-minute, to babysit her niece Maddie, she reluctantly helps out and see’s her life becomes a chaotic one in the process. Oh, and there’s Juggalo’s too. Yep.

Directed and written by Laura Steinel, her feature debut,

Emergence Season 1 Episode 1 Review: A Compelling Mystery

  • TVfanatic
If you're looking for a show to fill your sci-fi void, Emergence is that show.

At the conclusion of Emergence Season 1 Episode 1, there are enough similarities to make comparisons to shows like Netflix's Stranger Things and NBC's Manifest.

There is a supernatural occurrence involving a plane, a government conspiracy, a young girl with powers that harnesses water and electricity, and a loving and protective mother who gets drawn into the center of the mystery.

But some moments set it apart -- this mystery is more grounded without the flashiness, 1980's nostalgia, gray-areas, or monsters.

Emergence delivers on the promise of providing answers more rapidly than Manifest Season 1 while still leaving plenty to the imagination.

The pilot episode moves swiftly from scene-to-scene, sometimes making you feel as though you overlooked something. You haven't.

It also provides enough jumpy moments and backstory to leave you hooked by the end of the hour.

ABC's Emergence Premiere: Grade It!

If you’ve seen any of the (numerous) commercials for ABC’s Emergence, then you already know the strange event that happened in the town of Southold: “A plane crashed on a beach!”

But, as we learned in Tuesday’s premiere, it’s really what happens after the plane crash that’s even weirder.

TV Review: ‘Emergence’

  • Variety
There are fewer “Lost”-alikes nowadays than there used to be: Given how frequently hour-long puzzle-box shows seeking to draft off of the ABC smash’s success were met with utter indifference, the networks, give or take an occasional attempt like NBC’s “Manifest” moved on to attempting to copy the “This Is Us” formula. So it’s actually a bit charming to see “Emergence,” a new network show that puts forward a big supernatural-adjacent mystery expanding outward into potential conspiracy or mysticism. It’s the sort of show that they don’t much make anymore.

Here, Allison Tolman plays a small-town police chief who finds a young girl at the site of a plane accident; this young woman (Alexa Swinton) seems to have no recollection of who she is or how she got there. Tolman’s Jo Evans takes the young girl into her home but quickly finds herself

Emergence Isn't Just About the Mystery, But You Will Get Answers

Tonight, ABC launches a brand new mystery with sci-fi drama, Emergence.  The show stars Allison Tolman as a small-town sheriff who finds a strange little girl (Alexa Skye Swinton) at the site of a plane crash and takes her in, and from there, the questions start. Why doesn't she have a scratch on her? Why has she lost her memory? Where did she come from? Why are people after her? Why are people pretending to be her parents?  A new featurette, exclusive to E! News, dives a little bit deeper into what viewers might be able to expect from the show which isn't solely about the mystery. It's also about Jo (Tollman) and her family, including ex husband Alex (Donald Faison) dealing with the choice...

‘Emergence’ Review: Allison Tolman and a Light Touch Go a Long Way in ABC’s Conspiracy Thriller

‘Emergence’ Review: Allison Tolman and a Light Touch Go a Long Way in ABC’s Conspiracy Thriller
[Editor’s Note: The following review is more of a first impression, as the only episode available for advance screening was the pilot. For new broadcast series that warrant a deeper look, check IndieWire for a more thorough analysis in the coming weeks.]

Lost” has one of the most iconic openings in the history of television. Jack wakes up with scrapes on his face, alone in the woods, and quickly rushes to the beach where he’s surrounded by chaos. A plane has crashed, and the survivors are scrambling to stay that way, ducking cascading debris and avoiding whirring engine blades. Director J.J. Abrams’ intense sequence thrusts you into the action before you can question anything, before working backward to fill in the gaps — a pattern the show replicates through its iconic flashback structure and general time-jumping.

Emergence” also opens with a plane crash. It also airs on ABC, focuses on a traumatized survivor, and, eventually, unveils its genre as “conspiracy thriller.” But Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters tackle their opening and pilot very differently, introducing the heroes, setting, and overall grounding elements before toying with some really weird stuff at episode’s end.

Allison Tolman on ‘Emergence’ and Playing a Very Different Cop than Her ‘Fargo’ Character

From co-creators Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas, the ABC drama series Emergence follows small town police chief Jo Evans (Allison Tolman), who takes in a young child that she finds near the site of a mysterious plane crash. The girl, who they decide to call Piper (Alexa Swinton), has no memory of what’s happened, but begins to put everyone around her in danger, including Jo’s father (Clancy Brown), her ex (Donald Faison) and their teenage daughter (Ashley Aufderheide), as the questions about her identity and the connection to a larger conspiracy arise. During this …

Alexa Swinton on Emergence, Her Love of Friends, and More!

  • TVfanatic
When you sit down to watch ABC's exciting family thriller, Emergence, tonight, Alexa Swinton will be the center of attention.

In one of my favorite pilots to view this season, Alexa plays a lost little girl who appeals to the soft nature of local law enforcement, specifically a woman named Jo (Allison Tolman) who refuses to let the girl get sucked into the system when she cannot guarantee her safety.

What results is a new series that is both thrilling and family-oriented that offers very few answers for the identity of the mysterious little girl who immediately begins stealing hearts. We had a chance to chat with Alexa Swinton in preparation for the new season, and I think you're going to like her.

Hi, Alexa. How are you?

Good, how about you?

Good, thank you. I had to turn off my Amazon Alexa to talk with you. I bet

Link Tank: In the Tall Grass Is Classic Stephen King Horror

Spencer Mullen Sep 23, 2019

In the Tall Grass, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Death Stranding, and more in today's daily Link Tank!

Here are the three reasons why a planet from the prequels may return in The Rise of Skywalker.

"For a thousand generations, the Republic and the Jedi Knights kept the peace in the galaxy, governing from the planet Coruscant. Since 1991, Star Wars fans have thought of Coruscant as a pivotal planet, a place filled with tons of history — and also a great cityscape for a good chase sequence. The prequel trilogy’s most pivotal scenes happened on Coruscant, and now, as the Skywalker saga is set to end in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, there’s a strong argument that this film needs to check in on the famous planet. In fact, there are three compelling reasons why Rise of Skywalker will be incomplete with Coruscant. Here
