Exclusive: CAA has inked Emmy Award-winner and BAFTA and Tony Award-nominated Chris O’Dowd.

O’Dowd will star in the upcoming Theodore Melfi-directed feature drama The Starling starring Melissa McCarthy. The Irish born actor is known for such movies as the hit Universal Paul Feig-Judd Apatow comedy Bridesmaids, Aaron Sorkin’s Molly’s Game, Melfi’s St. Vincent, Rob Marshall’s Mary Poppins Returns, Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and Christopher Guest’s Mascots.

On TV he has starred in the Epix series Get Shorty opposite Ray Romano, The It Crowd, Lena Dunham’s Girls, HBO’s Family Tree and Moone Boy, which O’Dowd wrote, directed, and starred in. Moone Boy won an International Emmy Award for Best Comedy, two IFTAs for Best Entertainment Programme, and the British Comedy Award for Best Sitcom. Fremantle’s Storyglass Preps Scripted Mk-Ultra Podcast With Australia’s Easy Tiger
Exclusive: Storyglass, the scripted podcast label set up by American Gods producer Fremantle, is developing an international audio series based around the controversial Project Mk-Ultra.

The company has partnered with Easy Tiger, a Fremantle-backed production company from Australia, on six-part series Ultra.

The show, which is expected to air later this year, is set in 1959 and follows a young secret agent who goes undercover in a U.S. college to run drug trials and finds himself in the middle of the Mk-Ultra project.

Project Mk-Ultra was the CIA’s mind control program that the U.S. agency used to experiment on human subjects, much of which was considered illegal. The CIA was developing drugs and procedures that could be used in interrogations and was organized through the Office of Scientific Intelligence of the CIA and coordinated with the United States Army Biological Warfare Laboratories. Oscar week has come early this year.

With the shortened awards season, the festivities kick off during the first days of February. Voting closed on Feb. 4, so now it’s time to sit back, relax and enjoy some partying. From brunches, lunches and late-night dinner soirees, there’s plenty to do before the 92nd Academy Awards are handed out on Feb. 9 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

But the party doesn’t end when the winners are announced. There are plenty of post-Oscar parties to attend. Just make sure you’re on the list — no one wants to be seen getting rejected at the door.

AMC Networks Chief On Future Of ‘Sherman’s Showcase’ & ‘State Of The Union’
Two of AMC Networks’ most offbeat hits are musical comedy Sherman’s Showcase and short-form series State of the Union.

The group is now looking at the future of both shows. State of the Union aired on SundanceTV and Sherman’s Showcase airs on IFC.

The good news for the latter is that the company is set to give it a bigger slot on AMC when it comes back for an hour-long Black History Month Spectacular special this summer. The special was announced at AMC Network’s presentation at the TCA winter press tour but Deadline understands that it will air on both AMC and IFC.

Sarah Barnett, president of AMC Networks Entertainment Group and AMC Studios told Deadline that it will consider a second season of the show, which was created by and starrs former Late Night with Jimmy Fallon writers Diallo Riddle and Bashir Salahuddin, after the special airs.

Meryl Streep is set to star in and narrate an animated short film for Apple TV+ that will celebrate Earth Day, Apple announced Friday.

Streep will star with Chris O’Dowd, Jacob Tremblay and Ruth Negga in “Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth.” The film will premiere on Apple TV+ on April 17, five days ahead of Earth Day on April 22.

The animated film follows a precocious seven-year-old (voiced by Tremblay) who, over the course of Earth Day, learns about the wonders of the planet from his parents (voiced by O’Dowd and Negga) — and from a mysterious exhibit at the aptly titled Museum of Everything. Streep will narrate the short film.

Meryl Streep is the latest big name heading to Apple.

The acclaimed actor is attached to narrate a forthcoming animated short film about Earth Day, which is slated to premiere April 17 on Apple TV Plus.

Titled “Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth,” the short will also feature the voices of “State of the Union” star Chris O’Dowd, young “Room” breakout Jacob Tremblay, and “Loving” star Ruth Negga.

In celebration of Earth Day, which falls on April 22, the animated film follows a precocious seven-year-old (voiced by Tremblay) who, over the course of Earth Day, learns about the wonders of the planet from his parents (voiced by O’Dowd and Negga) — and from a mysterious exhibit at the “Museum of Everything.” Streep will provide voiceover narration to accompany the images.

The 36-minute film hails from Oscar-nominated indie animation house Studio Aka and was written by Philip Hunt and Luke Matheny.

Meryl Streep will lead a cast lending their voices to an animated short film that will premiere on Apple TV+ on April 17 in celebration of Earth Day. “Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth,” based on the 2017 Time magazine Best Book of the Year by Oliver Jeffers, will be narrated by Streep and feature the voices of Jacob Tremblay, Chris O’Dowd, and Ruth Negga.

The short follows a precocious 7-year-old who, over the course of Earth Day, learns from his parents — and from a mysterious exhibit called the Museum of Everything — about the wonders of the planet.

The 36-minute short is from independent animation production company Studio Aka, whose educational preschool series “Hey Duggee” has won three BAFTAs and two Emmys. Its short “A Morning Stroll,” directed by Grant Orchard, was nominated for an Oscar and BAFTA in 2012.

CBS All Access has unveiled a slew of names for the return to the anthology series, which airs later this year on the streaming service.

Created and exec produced by newcomers Zach Wechter and Jack Seidman (Pocket), the series follows a self-obsessed college student (Sheridan) stranded in the Colorado mountains whose only hope for survival is the tool he has spent his whole life learning to use: his smartphone. Wireless is a survival thriller set inside the car he crashed and the quickly dying phone that now is his lifeline.

Top of the Lake producer See-Saw Films has hired Killing Eve producer Elinor Day to bolster its television division.

The company, which recently scored a 12-episode commission for the Gary Oldman-fronted Slow Horses with Apple, has hired Day as executive producer for the UK Television Division. She reports to Head of Television Jamie Laurenson and Chief Operating Officer, TV Division Hakan Kousetta.

Day recently produced Season 2 of BBC America drama Killing Eve and BBC’s Kudos-produced drama Responsible Child. Previously, she worked on series including Secret Diary of a Call Girl for ITV2 and My Mad Fat Diary for Channel 4. She was formerly head of film at Darlow Smithson and was deputy head of production at FilmFour.

See-Saw Films recently produced short-form series State of the Union with Rosamund Pike and Chris O’Dowd and is in production on Colin Farrell-fronted BBC drama The North Water.

Babylon Berlin firm Beta Film has invested in fledgling British drama producer RubyRock Pictures.

The German producer and distributor has taken a minority stake in the UK company, recently set up by Zoë Rocha, former TV boss at The Fyzz Facility. The two companies will look to create, develop, finance and produce English-language series for the international market.

The move is Beta Film’s first investment in British drama production company.

RubyRock Pictures has yet to win a commission but it is developing series including The Heartless, a music drama written by Spotless writer Lucie Barât, the sister of The Libertines frontman Carl Barât and feminist horror anthology Her Horror. Rocha previously produced Channel 5 comedy Borderline and Sky’s Chris O’Dowd-fronted Moone Boy.
