NBC Names Its 2019-2020 Class For Alternative Directors Program

  • Deadline
The industry’s first directing pipeline program for unscripted shows has set its 2019-2020 class, helping to create equal representation behind the scenes on alternative series.

The Alternative Directors Program was launched two years ago to give experienced female and ethnically diverse directors the opportunity to expand their repertoire of alternative formats and complex directing styles. The ultimate goal is hiring them as show directors on an NBC or Universal Television Alternative Studios series.

This year, the program directors will rotate through two to three alternative shows across the network’s daytime, primetime and late night line-ups. During their tenure on each show, they will shadow the respective show directors through prep and production, with the goal of directing a meaningful segment on one of the shows they shadow. The show directors will also serve as their mentors and advocates.

Following the program, they will be considered for available series

‘Full Frontal With Samantha Bee’ Promotes Mike Drucker & Kristen Bartlett To Co-Head Writers
Full Frontal with Samantha Bee has promoted Mike Drucker and Kristen Bartlett to co-head writers for the late-night talker’s fifth season, which kicked off last week. They replace former head writer Melina Taub.

“Wait, we promoted who?”, said Bee. “I’m kidding, of course we promoted Mike and Kristen. They have been an instrumental part of our writing team. I’m an incredible recognizer of the incredibly talented.“

Writer-comedian Drucker joined the Full Frontal team in 2018. Before that, he was a staff writer on such shows as The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Adam Ruins Everything, Bill Nye Saves the World, and The President Show. Jimmy Kimmel on Trump's post-impeachment 'Pettysburg Address'

Late-night hosts discuss the end of impeachment and dissect two rambling, vindictive victory speeches by the president

Donald Trump was in a celebratory, vindictive mood on the day after the Senate acquitted him of impeachment charges, as “the only person who would celebrate almost being thrown out of the White House”, said Jimmy Kimmel. Earlier on Thursday, Trump attended the National Prayer Breakfast to offer what Kimmel called his “Pettysburg Address” – a rambling, boastful speech shouting out Republican allies and punching at imagined enemies.

Late-night hosts react to the Us Senate’s acquittal of Donald Trump on impeachment charges – and Mitt Romney’s lone Republican vote to convict

Donald Trump had his best week ever, said Samantha Bee on Full Frontal – he gave his State of the Union address, in which “Republicans chanted at the president as if he just won the gold medal for reading whole sentences without browning his slacks”, and was acquitted of impeachment charges by the Us Senate.

Stephen Colbert, Samantha Bee, More Bemoan Trump’s Acquittal
Late-night hosts from Stephen Colbert to Samantha Bee reacted to the frustrating inevitability of President Donald Trump’s impeachment acquittal on their respective shows Wednesday.

While yesterday’s party-line vote was largely expected for weeks, the occasion still marked an ominous approval of Trump’s executive power and yet another instance in which his actions will go unchecked.

“The only lesson Trump ever learns is that he gets away with everything,” Colbert said on The Late Show. “Multiple bankruptcies, nothing. Multiple sexual assault accusations, nothing. He’s in perfect health

WGA Awards: ‘Parasite’, ‘Jojo Rabbit’ Take Top Film Honors; HBO Sweeps Key TV Nods With ‘Succession’, ‘Barry’ & ‘Watchmen’ – The Complete List Of Winners
The WGA Awards boosted a pair of movie screenplays into Oscar frontrunner status on Saturday night, handing its marquee Original Screenplay award to Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won for Neon’s Parasite, and its Adapted Screenplay award to Taika Wiatiti for Searchlight’s Jojo Rabbit. Both of the winning scripts are nominated for Oscars on February 9.

This year the guild wasted no time in its 72nd edition, awarding its marquee prizes early in the night in simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York. Many of the film-side nominees gathered in the Edison Ballroom in NYC, so as to make the shorter jump to the BAFTAs which are Sunday in London.

Last year, the guild did not line up with Oscar’s screenwriting prizes, awarding Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade in original screenplay and Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty’s Can You Ever Forgive Me? in adapted. Green

‘Jojo Rabbit’ and ‘Parasite’ Win Top Writers Guild Awards (Complete List of Winners)

‘Jojo Rabbit’ and ‘Parasite’ Win Top Writers Guild Awards (Complete List of Winners)
Jojo Rabbit” has been named the best adapted screenplay of 2019 by the Writers Guild of America, which handed out its annual awards at simultaneous shows in Los Angeles and New York. “Parasite” has won the award as the best original screenplay, making it the first non-English-language feature to win a WGA award.

The film awards, which are traditionally held until the end of the show, were the first two categories of the night and were announced at the New York ceremony before the one in Los Angeles. Most of the nominees in those categories were heading to London for Sunday’s BAFTA Awards, so the unusual timing allowed them more time to get there from New York.

Because the Writers Guild limits eligibility to scripts written under the guild’s Minimum Basic Agreement or under the contracts of several allied international guilds, some significant Oscar contenders are always missing from the WGA nominees each year.
