Martin Freeman To Play Night Shift Police Officer In BBC Drama ‘The Responder’ From First-Time TV Writer
The BBC has commissioned a slate of four dramas from first-time TV writers, including a police series starring The Hobbit and Sherlock actor Martin Freeman as a night shift officer in the British city of Liverpool.

The Responder is written by Tony Schumacher, a former police officer who is fulfilling a lifelong ambition to write for the screen. He has been mentored by Accused scribe Jimmy McGovern and been part of the BBC Writers Room emerging writers initiative.

His six-part BBC Two series features Freeman as cop Chris, who works night shifts with his new rookie partner, Rachel. Each episode centers on a different shift, and the series is described as “wildly funny and painfully tragic.” Chris is dealing with a marriage that is breaking down while policing Liverpool’s criminal underbelly, and the show deals with the realities of policing in Britain and the complexities of Freeman’s character.

U.S. Streamer BritBox Picks Up Latest Season Of Oddball UK Comedy ‘Inside No. 9’ & Sets Premiere Date
Exclusive: The latest season of Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton’s oddball dark comedy Inside No. 9 is coming to U.S. streamer BritBox.

The digital platform, which is backed by BBC Studios and ITV, is to exclusively launch the fifth season of the show on March 17. This comes after the show launched on BBC Two in the UK earlier this month. The service currently airs the first four seasons of the comedy, which has been running since 2014.

Created by and featuring Shearsmith and Pemberton, who created The League of Gentlemen, Inside No. 9 is an anthology of darkly comic tales all take place inside a location that ties back to the number nine. Whether it’s a room in a popular resort or the top floor of a luxury hotel, the stories quickly go from innocent to insidious often with a killer of a twist ending.

Angelyne Joins Peacock Series As Executive Producer As Lucy Tcherniak Inks First-Look Deal With Ucp
Angelyne director and producer Lucy Tcherniak is expanding her relationship with Ucp, signing a first-look deal with the studio behind the upcoming Peacock series. The deal comes as the real-life Angelyne has boarded the eponymous series as executive producer.

Allison Miller (Strange Angel) serves as showrunner and executive producer on the series, alongside Tcherniak who directs and executive produces all episodes. Tcherniak join Angelyne star Emmy Rossum (Shameless) and Miller, who also have deals at Ucp.

Rossum stars in the title role in Peacock’s limited series about fame, identity, survival, billboards, Corvettes, lingerie, men, women, women teasing men, men obsessed with women, West Hollywood, crystals, UFOs, and most importantly of all, the self-proclaimed Rorschach test in pink, glow-in-the-dark queen of the universe, Angelyne.

Sky CEO Jeremy Darroch Heralds Pay-tv Operator’s Best-Ever Season Lineup

Speaking at U.K. pay-tv operator Sky’s programming showcase at London’s Tate Modern art museum, on the banks of the Thames River, Wednesday evening, its CEO, Jeremy Darroch, said: “In the 12 years I’ve been running Sky I’ve never seen a lineup on screen like we are going to have in the next year or so.”

The event, described by its host Chris Evans as “the biggest season launch any TV company in Britain has ever undertaken,” was staged in a theater dressed to look like a ritzy jazz lounge, with plush red-velvet seating and art-deco lamps, and chilled champagne and herb-infused olives at every table. The waiting staff were all dressed as bell boys straight out of “The Grand Budapest Hotel.”

Fox’s straight-to-series adaptation of the BBC comedy Miranda has found its mom: Swoosie Kurtz (Mike & Molly) has joined the Mayim Bialik-fronted remake, now titled Call Me Kat (fka Carla), our sister site Deadline reports.

The multi-cam follows a 39-year-old woman (Bialik) who struggles every day against society and her mother (Kurtz) to prove that you can not have everything you want and still be happy. That’s why she spent the money her parents set aside for her wedding to open a Kat Café in Louisville, Kentucky.

U.K. Pay-tv Company Sky to Offer 80 Original Series in 2020, Up 25% on 2019

Pay-tv operator Sky will offer 80 original series to its British subscribers this year, an increase of 25% year-on-year from last year, together with a 40% boost in the volume of programming from the U.S., it announced Wednesday. It also unveiled 10 new shows it has ordered.

Sky revealed its plans at a showcase event at London’s Tate Modern art gallery, where it shared exclusive previews of new shows due to air this year, with more than 25 talent on stage including David Schwimmer, Steve Coogan, Maisie Williams, Billie Piper, Nick Mohammed, Dynamo and Rob Brydon.

As well as its original and acquired shows, Sky is delivering aggregated content from its partnerships with Netflix, BBC, Channel 4 and Channel 5. It is also launching new channels like Sky Comedy, Sky Nature and Sky Documentaries.

Imelda Staunton Has Officially Been Named The Crown's Final Queen Elizabeth II

We're still reeling from The Crown's intense third season, but Netflix has already queued up the cast for seasons five. While Olivia Colman, Helena Bonham Carter, and Tobias Menzies will continue to lead the set of actors tackling the roles into season four in 2020, fans will meet a new ensemble who will carry the story of the British royal family into the 1990s and onward. Back in November 2019, Deadline reported that the streaming service had begun searching for cast replacements and had entered negotiations with the new queen: Harry Potter's Imelda Staunton. Jan. 31, Netflix announced that Staunton was officially taking over Colman's crown and that her debut season would be the series's final one.

Staunton is perhaps best known for portraying Professor Dolores Umbridge in Harry Potter , and more recently, appeared in the Downton Abbey movie, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, and A Confession opposite Sherlock's Martin Freeman.

BritBox Snaps Up Rob Lowe’s ‘Wild Bill’, Martin Freeman’s ‘A Confession’ & Jason Watkins’ ‘McDonald and Dodds’ – TCA
Rob Lowe’s ITV drama Wild Bill, cop drama McDonald and Dodds (starring The Crown’s Jason Watkins), Martin Freeman’s A Confession and Sticks and Stones (starring Killing Eve’s Ken Nwosu) are the latest British titles to be snapped up by streamer BritBox.

This comes after the ITV and BBC joint venture unveiled its latest commission, Father Brown spin-off Sister Boniface, earlier this morning.

The announcements were made as part of BritBox’s Winter TCA press tour session.

BritBox, BBC Studios and ITV’s streaming service in North America, has added several co-productions, live specials, renewals and short series to its lineup, BritBox president Soumya Sriraman announced Tuesday at the Television Critics Assn. gathering in Pasadena.

Among the shows coming to the service are “A Confession,” an original drama from Jeff Pope, starring Martin Freeman (“Sherlock”) and Imelda Staunton (“Vera Drake”), about divergent paths to justice for two women when the confession of a violent criminal is ruled inadmissible; the six-part mystery series “Wild Bill,” starring Rob Lowe; “Sister Boniface,” about a crime-solving nun, a spin-off of the mystery series “Father Brown”; a co-production with ITV from Mammoth Screen, “McDonald and Dodds,” about a pair of mismatched police detectives, starring Jason Watkins; and Mike Bartlett’s three-part psychological thriller “Sticks and Stones,” starring Ken Nwosu.

Watch Trailers For New FX Series ‘Dave’ and ‘Devs’ (Videos)

FX has dropped the trailers for three of its upcoming series: “Dave,” “Devs” and “The Most Dangerous Animal of All.

The trailers for all three shows, as well as FX’s “Breeders,” were dropped during FX’s day of press at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour.

“Dave” stars rapper Lil Dicky as himself, using his real name, Dave Burd. The comedy series is executive produced by Big Machine’s Scooter Braun and Kevin Hart.
