Posterized December 2019: ‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire,’ ‘A Hidden Life,’ ‘In Fabric,’ and More

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.

Because December’s posters unfortunately leave a bit to be desired, this month’s roundup will be somewhat brief. I tried to cull together three more to join with the very spare Uncut Gems (December 13), but finally decided there wasn’t much to say about that one either. It’s tough when two of the most recognizable titles are Cats (December 20) and its cheaply shadowed logo alongside Just Mercy (limited December 25; wide January 10) and its … text.

There are still a few gems to look out for, though. Not

Watch Haim Cover Robyn’s ‘Show Me Love’
For their latest radio pop/soft-rock cover, Haim have decided to perform a Robyn song — but it’s not “Dancing on My Own” or anything from the Body Talk era, when Robyn became the international patron saint of dancing out your feelings.

Instead, the sisterly trio from L.A. performed “Show Me Love” — one of Robyn’s early radio hits from the Nineties — on BBC Radio 1’s Piano Sessions with Este Haim on lead vocals. The band beautifully adapted the pop song into a searing piano ballad, and it

Jack Black Thinks the Avengers Should Recruit Nacho Libre
Jack Black is a man of many talents. Whether those talents are your cup of tea or not remains up to you, but in the end, it can't be denied that the man keeps bringing his boyish brand of brash humor to box-office successes one after the other. But will Black ever lend his talents to, let's say, a Marvel movie? Black says he doesn't have any plans but jokes that his character from director Jared Hess' 2006 cult classic comedy Nacho Libre would make one hell of an Avenger.

Specifically, when asked if he'll ever join a Marvel film, Jack Black said this.

"I don't have any plans. I mean, I feel like Nacho Libre was kind of a superhero. He wore a costume and fought crime and was a hero of sorts. So, I guess I've already scratched that itch, as it were. Unless they want to, ya know,

Dwayne Johnson opens up on possibility of 'Jumanji 3'

Hollywood actor-producer Dwayne Johnson says the prospect of coming out with a third film in the "Jumanji" franchise totally depends on audience reaction to upcoming second part, "Jumanji: The Next Level".

Asked about the plans for the third part, Johnson said: "That depends on the audience. When we made the first one, we thought that the concept was unique and we will see what happens. We never thought of making part two. So, same thing applies here too. We will keep our eyes open and heads to the ground and (see how the second part fares)."

Yo La Tengo have been performing their famous eight-night Hanukkah run for the better part of 18 years, but it has nothing to do with being Jewish. “We’re not all Jewish, for one thing,” frontman Ira Kaplan tells Rolling Stone. “Even those of us that are are not religious in any way. It was more that it seemed challenging and funny to play eight nights in a row with all the hoopla over Christmas. I thought that Hanukkah could use a bit of a spotlight.”

Even so, their annual run
