‘Undone’ Review: The Follow-Up to ‘BoJack Horseman’ Is Mundane and Miraculous

Netflix’s BoJack Horseman has been one of the best shows on television since it debuted in 2014. It is a hilarious satire of celebrity and show business, while also being a profoundly sad portrait of depression, loneliness and substance abuse. Virtually the only complaint I’ve ever heard from anyone who’s watched more than the first few episodes is that its visual style is intentionally primitive, bordering on ugly. (And even that allows for elaborate background gags and bizarrely compelling designs of the show’s many animal/human hybrid characters.

How the World of ‘Undone’ Came to Life Through Rotoscope

  • Indiewire
A genre-bending series that sends its heroine through time and space to unlock a family mystery, the Amazon Prime Video Original “Undone” breaks new ground by becoming the first episodic series wholly created through rotoscope animation.

While animated shows have been part of the television landscape for decades, rotoscope provides a unique view in which to tell this complex story. Industry veterans Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg, who were producers on acclaimed animated series “BoJack Horseman,” bring us the rotoscoped series Undone. To explain what to expect before getting started on the series, we have prepared the following primer on rotoscope animation.

First, what’s the show about?

After an auto accident leaves Alma Winograd-Diaz (Rosa Salazar) hospitalized, she begins to experience visions of her late father, Jacob (Bob Odenkirk), who encourages her to explore her newfound ability to bend reality in order to help solve his untimely death. But

‘Undone’ Review: Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg’s Gorgeous TV Show Breaks the Mold

‘Undone’ Review: Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg’s Gorgeous TV Show Breaks the Mold
One of the first things you see in “Undone” is a car crash. One of the last things you see, in the pilot at least, is a car crash. One of the things you see the most over five episodes of Season 1 — in a myriad of different ways, interrupting various other moments — is this same exact car crash, where Alma (Rosa Salazar) gets T-boned after running a stop sign because she sees… something… on the side of the road. That “something” holds great meaning to the central mystery, but, as it first appears in the show, it’s just a few brush strokes on the giant canvas that is “Undone”; it’s an important part, but also a means to the bigger picture — and I’m not just talking about the show’s groundbreaking format.

TV Review: Amazon’s ‘Undone’ Starring Rosa Salazar and Bob Odenkirk

TV Review: Amazon’s ‘Undone’ Starring Rosa Salazar and Bob Odenkirk
Despite the catastrophic crash that opens the series, it takes some time for “Undone” to reveal its story’s surprising depths. It seems at first to just be about Alma (Rosa Salazar), a San Antonio woman who spends just about every waking hour trudging through her own depressive fog, hoping that one day something extraordinary might happen to shake her out of it and prove that there’s something even mildly interesting worth living for. She has a job as a preschool teacher, a perfectionist younger sister (Angelique Cabral), a perpetually worried mother (Constance Marie), and an easygoing boyfriend (Siddarth Dhananjay) who insists he likes Alma the way she is, to her knee-jerk suspicion. She’s never gotten over the sudden death of her father (Bob Odenkirk). She’s disaffected, very funny, and a little mean despite herself. She also believes, as she tells her sister during a particularly tough conversation,
