Tom Hanks, Rachel Bloom, Stephen Colbert, Stephen King Pay Tribute to Adam Schlesinger
Whether it was the snarky but sincere pop of Fountains of Wayne and Ivy, the ‘60s retro of Tom Hanks’ “That Thing You Do!” or the Broadway fare of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” Adam Schlesinger’s music reached far beyond his public profile. The master songwriter passed away Wednesday morning at the age of 52 from complications related to coronavirus.

The reaction from friends, family and fans on social media was as swift as it was diverse.

Tom Hanks, the star and producer of “That Thing You Do!” sent a heartfelt Tweet about the songwriter with whom he worked on the 1996 film, and even referred to the fictional band in the film, The Oneders. “There would be no Playtone without Adam Schlesinger, without his ‘That Thing You Do!,’” Hanks wrote, referring to his own company. “He was a One-der. Lost him to Covid-19. Terribly sad today.”

Spade has the support of his staff, but he’s also doing more of the day-to-day work of the show.

“They have to make me set up the camera, and the phone and the lighting and the mike,” says Spade, in an interview. “I walk around while they are in my ear – ‘Walk right down the stairs.’ ‘We see your face.’ I’m sweating.”

In the not-too-distant past, the popular comedian did jokes in front of a live audience, enjoyed the company

Rick Ludwin Dies: NBC Stalwart Of Three Decades Who Championed ‘Seinfeld’ Was 71
Rick Ludwin, an NBC stalwart of three decades who proved his value to the network both as a trusted liaison to Johnny Carson and an early champion of Jerry Seinfeld, died Sunday in Los Angeles, according to the network. He was 71.

Ludwin launched his show-biz odyssey with one legendary funnyman — the future executive did some joke-writing for Bob Hope — and later cemented his legacy with another comedy icon by supporting the game-changing Seinfeld when other executives at NBC were skeptical of airing a show that was infamously “about nothing.”

Seinfled (1989-1998) became one of the most lucrative primetime ventures in television history but Ludwin’s primary focus at NBC was guiding the network’s specials and late-night programming. Taking over the speciality in 1989, Ludwin held the high-profile post through 2011. That 22-year tenure made him a linchpin figure for Saturday Night Live — it also put him in the crossfire of the

Sandler Gets Serious

Tom Jolliffe looks at Adam Sandler’s successful forays into drama…

When you get a name for yourself doing something, it becomes difficult to shake off that label. When Robert De Niro had been so well known as gangsters, maniacs or tough guys, his ventures into comedy were initially surprising. When it comes to Adam Sandler, the stand-up, turned SNL star, turned movie star has become synonymous with shlub comedy. He’s often the under-achieving, every-man hero getting one over against the nemesis of more privilege.

Sandler began with sleeper hits in a booming MTV era comedy market that saw guys like Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Chris Farley and Pauly Shore being pushed as the next big thing. That period between 90-96 seemed to have huge swathes of new comedy stars arriving, at a time when perhaps the audiences for Steve Martin, Bill Murray, Rick Moranis, Chevy Chase etc, didn
