TV Ratings: 'Black Lightning' Gets a Promising Premiere on CW

TV Ratings: 'Black Lightning' Gets a Promising Premiere on CW
Good news for the CW. It seems the network still hasn't exhausted its viewers' appetite for superhero shows.

Black Lightning joined the lineup on Tuesday night, making it the fifth comic book series on the network — seventh, if you're counting genre-divergent entries iZombie and Riverdale. The first hour pulled a strong 0.8 rating among adults 18-49 and 2.3 million viewers. Those numbers are quite sound by CW standards, especially when you consider the fact that lead-in The Flash, the CW's No. 1 series, only performed incrementally better. Black Lightning shared The Flash's score in the key demo and lost fewer...

‘The Blacklist’ Team on the Road to 100 Episodes: ‘There is a Lot of Wish Fulfillment Going On’

‘The Blacklist’ Team on the Road to 100 Episodes: ‘There is a Lot of Wish Fulfillment Going On’
It was a moment five seasons, four years and countless twists, turns and cases of the week in the making when the cast and crew of “The Blacklist” gathered on-set in New York for their 100th episode celebration late last year.

The series started with James Spader’s Raymond “Red” Reddington surrendering himself to the FBI with the claim that he wanted to help track down and capture some of the very criminals with whom he spent the last two decades of his life working. But the show delivered so much in the first 99 episodes that it’s hard for the actors to single out the milestone without acknowledging all that came before.

“This show, I think, has longevity because it packs in a lot of entertainment,” says Megan Boone, who plays FBI Agent Elizabeth “Liz” Keen.

“For me, today is episode 11 of the fifth season,” said Spader on-set. “So it marks the halfway point and of

‘Cosmos’ Ep Ann Druyan on ‘Daring’ Season 2, Climate Change Deniers, and Neil deGrasse Tyson
“Cosmos” is making a comeback — and it’s all thanks to Ann Druyan, Carl Sagan’s widow, who serves as writer and executive producer on the science documentary series.

The first season — a follow-up to the original 1980s series hosted by Sagan — aired back in 2014 on National Geographic and Fox to critical acclaim as well as popular appeal. It ranks as NatGeo’s most watched program ever.

So it was a passion project that Druyan was eager to revisit, having spent the last two years writing the episodes with Brannon Braga. Here, she tells Variety her hopes for the new season, why more women are going into science, and what her late husband would think of series host Neil deGrasse Tyson.

How does the new season compare to the first?

I don’t know because I’m so close to it, but I think it’s more daring, less afraid to feel. The science
