Digital Shorts: ‘Transcripted’ Review (Nintendo Switch)

In Digital Shorts we review some of the latest video games that are only available digitally (at least in the UK), in a short-form review format. In this edition we take a look at Transcripted, a twin-stick shooter now available on the Nintendo Switch.

Transcripted is just one of many twin stick shooters that has recently been launched on the Nintendo Switch, but it comes with a unique twist that reveals itself during the first few missions. You see, Transcripted is a bit like the videogame version of Innerspace, the 1987 movie featuring Dennis Quaid, Meg Ryan and some other guy (Martin Short).

In Transcripted, players pilot a nanoprobe at a microscopic level and must float around inside samples looking for rogue pathogens. These are returned to the lab for assessment by a friendly AI in order to further human research as instructed by the somewhat questionable Professor Dahl. Dahl has »

Horror On Sea 2018 Interview: Richard Mansfield talks ‘Blood on Satan’s Paw’

Blood on Satan’s Paw is new surreal folk horror from writer and director Richard Mansfield, which has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on Sunday 21st January. I got chance to ask Richard about his inspirations for the film, the sudden increased interest in Folk Horror and the bespoke score from Cunning Folk.

What can we expect from the film Blood on Satan’s Paw?

You can expect a surreal trip to the woods, bad bunnies, creepy puppets, acid-laced lollipops and a demonic bear.

What was your inspiration for writing Blood on Satan’s Paw?

I was very much inspired by the Folk Horror classics like The Wicker Man, Witchfinder General and Blood on Satan’s Claw as well as all the original Hammer films from a youth spent watching inappropriate horrors I’d recorded off late night TV.

There seems to be an increased interest in Folk Horror. »

The CW have released a new trailer for their latest superhero show, Black Lightning. Yet despite this being another CW superhero show, don’t get too excited about seeing the character crossover with the rest of the networks DC line-up. Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) is a man wrestling with a secret. As the father of two daughters and principal of a charter high school that also serves as a safe haven for young people in a New Orleans neighborhood overrun by gang violence, he is a hero to his community. ‘The Walking Dead 8×08: How It’s Gotta Be’ Review

Remember when the Saviours were trapped in a siege and Rick’s (Andrew Lincoln) plan appeared to be working? We should have known things wouldn’t run smoothly, this is The Walking Dead. With many people wondering if it was their fault this week, the answer is yes, it is their fault.

With Rick racing back to Alexandria to protect his family, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is already there and ready to raise hell. Carl (Chandler Riggs) takes control though and takes steps to help people escape, but will they all make it out alive?

Negan is in his element this week, and when he gives his big speech, I can’t help but compare him to Rick. What Negan is doing is what Rick has done, but he takes a more direct approach. When Rick finally does make it back and we see the two starts to fight, Negan »

‘The Gifted 1×09: outfoX’ Review

12 December 2017 10:01 AM, PST

Now that we know about the origins of the Strucker family powers, The Gifted provides us with an interesting question. If Andy (Percy Hynes White) and Lauren (Natalie Alyn Lind) have the ability to wield hugely destructive power, should they use it?

With the Struckers dealing with the news about Andy and Lauren, the rest of the mutants look to Trask Industries. With Esme (Skyler Samuels) the new mutant with psychic powers apparently manipulating the situation, is she all she seems?

If there is one thing that the Mutant Underground has handled so far, it is not to overstretch themselves and get into trouble. This week though as time is running out, the need to act slowly worms its way into the group. The audience gets to see that Esme is doing a good job at pushing this too, raising the potential that she may be a mole in the group. »

The Snarling is new horror comedy from director Pablo Raybould and producer Ben Manning, which has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on Saturday 20th January. This will be the official launch of The Snarling (and screening of the release version).

I got chance to ask a few questions about why they decided to write a horror comedy, working several jobs on a small budget production and Easter eggs in the film.

What can we expect from the film?

Pablo: Well, firstly, it has its pre-launch special screening at Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on January 20th at the Park Inn in Southend and this is where the whole thing began. So, what can you expect well… so many things. Comedy – first and foremost. There are also lots of same genre film references in there for those that get them. ‘Black Mirror’ Review (Xbox One)

12 December 2017 4:01 AM, PST

Neither a remake nor a direct continuation of the 2003 game of the same name, Black Mirror is a point and click horror/thriller that takes place in the late 19th Century and features a story of supernatural and the occult, as seen through the eyes of one David Gordon, youngest member and heir of the Gordon family. Made by King Art Games (also responsible for Battle World Kronos, Book of Unwritten Tales 1 and 2 and The Dwarves) Black Mirror has a lot of potential, but does it live up to expectations?

In a word, no. But that’s mainly because of a whole raft of technical issues that hamper the gameplay and prevent the player from enjoying what could otherwise have been a fairly enjoyable storyline. The game opens with David’s father running panicked through a maze in the middle of the night. Mumbling incoherently, he rushes towards a somewhat »
