Dark Universe: the undignified death of a cinematic universe

For some, The Mummy's marketing campaign began not with a bang, but a squeaky Tom Cruise scream. In December 2016, an unfinished trailer for the then-forthcoming film appeared online, and soon went viral: lacking music and proper sound effects, the promo's otherwise dramatic visuals suddenly seemed comically threadbare. A violent plane crash unfolded with only a few chunks of dialogue and an amusing yelp from co-star Annabelle Wallis; Tom Cruise stumbled about in zero-gravity with only a few apologetic 'oofs' and 'eeks' for company.

Steps were taken to have the leaked trailer removed, but as is the way of the web,

Are You Screening? Podcast #216 – The Mummy Review

The Dark Universe may be off to a rocky start, even with Tom Cruise, and Universal may have to adjust its theory of pumping money into the franchise it’s creating. The real problem with this title specifically is that it doesn’t seem like anyone was looking for The Mummy to show up again, and that’s the audience the film managed.

But, is it that bad? It’s a movie that made some mistakes and spends too much time on things that are only there so that they can show up in future installments, but there’s a lot of fun to be had for those looking for escapism.

Of course, it may also be pretty boring, depending on how you look at things.

We’ll let you know if you need to head to this one.

  • DailyDead
Ahmanet awakens today with the release of The Mummy (2017) on Blu-ray, DVD, 4K Ultra HD, and VOD platforms from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, and for our latest Q&A, I had the chance to catch up with Yianni-Georgiou, one of the artists behind the amazing makeup of The Mummy, to discuss bringing the undead to life (including Sofia Boutella's title character) and looking back at the classic Universal Monsters films for stylistic inspirations.

Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Lizzie. How did the opportunity to work on The Mummy come about, and what were you drawn to in particular with this project?

Lizzie Yianni-Georgiou: I got recommended to the producers for The Mummy because Guardians of the Galaxy was going to America to be shot. And our producer from Guardians thought he wouldn’t be able to take me with him, so he

The Mummy gets an Honest Trailer

Screen Junkies has turned its attention to The Mummy, the first instalment of Universal Pictures’ shared Dark Universe, for the latest episode of Honest Trailers.

“Explore the terror of a film without a soul; that misses the horror of the original; and settles in to it’s own blend of action-blockbuster cliches that manage to kill all hype for the dark universe before it even began. If the prospect of an action movie universe starring men in their 50’s fighting monsters from the 30’s excites you, then saddle up as Tom Cruise bumbles from action scene to exposition dump without pausing to develop his character beyond home-schooled Indiana Jones in this rare Cruise misfire.”

Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day,
