'Bigotry Seems Emboldened': George W. Bush Shrewdly Takes Down Donald Trump in Viral Speech

19 October 2017 12:06 PM, PDT | | See recent news »

Without mentioning President Trump by name, former President George W. Bush delivered a viral speech denouncing the current state of American politics and lamenting that “bigotry” now seems “emboldened.”

Speaking at the Bush Institute’s “Spirit of Liberty” forum in New York on Thursday, the 43rd president told the crowd, “In recent decades, public confidence in our institutions has declined. Our governing class has often been paralyzed in the face of obvious and pressing needs. The American dream of upward mobility seems out of reach for some who feel left behind in a changing economy. Discontent deepened and sharpened partisan conflicts. »

Morgan Freeman Is Colin Powell in Bush Era Biopic

19 October 2017 7:15 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Morgan Freeman has signed on to play former Secretary of State Colin Powell in a new biopic entitled Powell, which is being set up at Hyde Park Entertainment. Reginald Hudlin, who directed Marshall, the Thurgood Marshall biopic that hit theaters last weekend, is attached to direct, from a script by Ed Whitworth, which landed on the coveted Black List back in 2011. No production schedule has been given thus far, but with a major star like Morgan Freeman on board, it's possible that this could move forward very quickly.

The script follows Colin Powell when he was Secretary of State for President George W. Bush, following his service as a decorated U.S. Army General. He was the first ever African-American Secretary of State in U.S. history. He initially did not approve of the President's plan to invade Iraq, since he didn't believe that they possessed weapons of mass destruction. »

Powell will detail the former Secretary of State's time in the George W. Bush White House.

Morgan Freeman has always been a stately presence, and now he’ll take that persona to the logical next step by portraying former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell in a biopic.

Freeman will star in Powell by director Reginald Hudlin, who’s coming off the heels of his Thurgood Marshall biopic, Marshall. The script was written by Ed Whitwort and has remained on the best unproduced screenplay Black List since 2011. The film is set during Powell’s time in the White House serving as Secretary of State under President George W. Bush.

A respected Army general and the first African-American Secretary of State, Powell became a controversial figure after making a case for the war in Iraq to the United Nations Security Council. Powell initially opposed U.S. involvement in the Middle East, »

Trump was soon forced to walk back what Obama aides called an “outrageous lie,” admitting that his predecessor “probably sometimes and maybe sometimes he didn’t. I don’t know.”

Liz Hannah to Write MGM’s 9/11 Air Force One Drama “Only Plane in the Sky”

Liz Hannah’s incredible breakout year just got even better. The screenwriter’s debut, “The Post,” bows December 22 and boasts Steven Spielberg as a director and stars Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks. Now she’s been hired by MGM to write “Only Plane in the Sky,” a drama that takes place on Air Force One in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. Deadline broke the news.

Inspired by a Politico article by Garrett Graff, the project follows former U.S. President George W. Bush and his team as they are “whisked off from a Florida schoolroom and into Air Force One and into the sky — which was considered the safest place to be” following the terrorist attacks in New York City, the source summarizes.

MGM snagged the rights to “Only Plane in the Sky” after a competitive bidding war last year. No word on who will star, direct, or produce.

“It’s going to follow the similar structure to the article, starting in Florida in the morning and will end with him returning to D.C.,” Hannah told Deadline. “The things that get me excited and the stories I want to tell, the №1 thing that attracts me is the characters. Looking to tell a person’s story as they experience it individually. I’m from New York and grew up during 9/11, and I never ever thought I would want to write a movie about 9/11, but this kind of tore the cloth away and showed they experienced it, too, and it humanized everyone on that plane for me,” she explained. “It’s very compelling and very human. Everyone was a New Yorker that day. Everyone was an American. It wasn’t about being a Republican or a Democrat. I think that is an important story to tell right now.”

Hannah studied producing at the American Film Institute and got her start working in development at Charlize Theron’s production company. “The Post,” a drama about the Washington Post’s role in publishing the Pentagon Papers, marked her first spec deal. She was inspired to tell the story after reading former Post publisher Katharine Graham’s memoir. “I absolutely fell in love with her,” Hannah told Vulture. Hannah was shocked the spec attracted so much attention, especially since it was “a script about two people in their 50s in which no one kisses each other.” She received a call from producer and former Sony studio head Amy Pacscal, who told her that Spielberg was interested in directing.

Liz Hannah to Write MGM’s 9/11 Air Force One Drama “Only Plane in the Sky” was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story. »
